Job Summary

The Principal Associate is an essential part of the UCSF's Audit & Advisory team, providing independent and objective assessment on the organization's systems of controls and promoting concepts of internal control and operational process improvements in the dynamic and innovative environment of UCSF Health.

Under the direction of the Senior Manager, the Principal Associate is responsible for performing full scope of auditing encompassing highly complex financial, compliance, information systems, advisory and investigative reviews, including revenue cycle processes, professional and hospital billing, and regulatory compliance. The Principal Associate is expected to exercise individual judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for developing audit conclusions. Normally receives high level oversight on audit assignments with general instruction provided on new or more complex audit work. The Principal Associate provides functional advice, training and/ or guidance to less-experienced audit professionals.

This position will be communicating the results of work completed and presents potential actions to improve operational efficiency, effectiveness and strengthen systems of internal control, or result in other improvements. The Principal Associate maintains open communications with client operating and management personnel to promote exchanges of information and collaborate on potential actions to address identified control issues.

Duties of the Principal Associate include assessing organizational and operational risks for assigned review areas, designing and preparing audit programs, conducting fieldwork, preparing work papers, drafting reports, and following up on management corrective actions in accordance with professional auditing standards. While the Principal Associate's primary area of audit will be the UCSF Health and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals; projects in other parts of the campus will be assigned.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $94,400 - $201,800 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Professional auditing or accounting certification in one or more of the following: Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Healthcare Internal Audit Professional (CHIAP), Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC).
  • 5+ years of recent internal audit experience, including 1-3 years of healthcare auditing
  • Advanced knowledge of the audit profession, theories and systems of internal control, and professional auditing standards.
  • Broad knowledge of finance, accounting, business and systems operations, and Healthcare finance, billing, and regulations.
  • Advanced analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations.
  • Skills to determine and apply appropriate policies and practices in the completion of audit assignments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to present sensitive information with diplomacy and in a clear and concise manner. Presents to a wide variety of audiences, including senior management and external agencies.
  • Efficiently manage time and workload, including planning, organizing, prioritizing, and following through on a variety of tasks, assignments, projects, and reports.
  • Ability to multitask in getting assigned work completed timely and adapt to unexpected changes in work assignments and priorities


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree
  • Specialized certification in Healthcare, Sponsored Research and/or Compliance
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. Proficient in working with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience in auditing in large research universities or academic medical centers.
  • May require specialized expertise in enterprise software and relational databases. Knowledge and experience using ACL, IDEA or other data analytics tool.


License/Certification

  • Professional auditing or accounting certification in one or more of the following: Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Healthcare Internal Audit Professional (CHIAP), Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC).

Department Description

UCSF Audit & Advisory Services (A&AS) provides independent, objective assurance and advice that provides value added services toward reducing risk and improving operations. These critical activities contribute significantly to the ability of UCSF to achieve its organizational objectives and mission of advancing health worldwide.

Services provided include assurance/compliance audits, advisory/consulting projects, and investigative reviews. The scope of A&AS encompasses activities within the UCSF Healthcare Enterprise; Professional Schools, Institutes and Centers, and related academic units of the UCSF Campus; and Finance and Administrative Services.

Additionally, A&AS coordinates the activities of visiting external auditors; provides special studies and assessments as requested by management; serves as the coordination and triage point for all whistleblower complaints; and assists, as requested, the University's financial auditors, PricewaterhouseCoopers, in performing the annual examination of the financial statements.
