DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF - OPERATIONS

The Opportunity
The Town of Mansfield, Connecticut (www.mansfieldct.gov) is seeking to fill its newly created full-time Deputy Fire Chief of Operations position for its Fire and Emergency Services Department. A sample listing of duties includes: planning, organizing, leading, directing and supervising all fire operations and emergency medical services, activities; coordinating work with other town departments and neighboring career and volunteer fire companies; maintaining records and preparing reports; assisting the Fire Chief in department-wide administrative matters as assigned. This position will be directly involved in commanding and coordinating emergency medical services activities, fire emergency activities, and apparatus maintenance.

This position is second in command of the Fire Department, generally assigned to oversee one or more of the divisions within the Mansfield Fire Department, with all the authority and responsibility of the Fire Chief in the Chief's absence. Assumes responsibility of the Department in absence of Fire Chief and may be appointed Acting Fire Chief as assigned. Work requires considerable independent judgment, which is restricted only by department regulations and review by the Fire Chief.

Mansfield, with a population of approximately 26,000, is located in the Northeastern portion of the state, better known as Connecticut's Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor. Home to the University of Connecticut, Mansfield offers the unique blend of urban (Downtown Storrs - www.mansfieldmdp.org), suburban, and rural living in a university setting. Mansfield has a variety of cultural and educational offerings, as well as an abundance of natural resources ideal for activities such as hiking, cycling, and kayaking. Mansfield is a Council-Manager form of government, with the Town Manager serving as the Chief Executive Officer responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Town.

Work Schedule & Location
This position is 35 hours per week. This is an exempt position eligible to earn compensatory time for hours worked in excess of 40 per week. The selected candidate will normally work four consecutive days, Tuesdays-Fridays. Additionally, due to the public safety nature of this position, evening, weekend, and holiday work will be required to meet operational needs of the Department and the Town.

Due to the selected candidate being required to respond to emergency incidents, residency within thirty (30) minute travel time of Town of Mansfield is required.

The primary office for this position is located at the Audrey Beck Municipal Building, 4 South Eagleville Road, Mansfield. Additionally, this position frequently visits our three fire stations located at 879 Stafford Road, 999 Storrs Road, and 1722 Storrs Road.

Compensation
The salary range is $88,628 - $124,017/yr. The hiring rate of pay will depend upon the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. The Town of Mansfield provides an extremely competitive benefits package. Mansfield participates in the Connecticut Municipal Retirement System (CMERS), a defined pension plan, a variety of other benefits such as medical, vision, dental, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance, tuition assistance, paid vacation and holidays.

Minimum Training and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Service Management, Public Administration, Emergency Medical Services, or related field.
  • Certified Fire Officer II, in accordance with NFPA 1021, Fire Officer Professional Qualifications.
  • Fire Instructor II, in accordance with NFPA 1041, Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications.
  • Certified Safety Officer in accordance with N.F.P.A.1521, Fire Department Safety Officer.
  • Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT or AEMT). EMS Licensure at the paramedic level is preferred.
  • Certification as a State of Connecticut Fire Marshal/Inspector/Investigator is preferred.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in fire service administration including five (5) years' experience as a Fire Officer in a combination fire department with similar operations to the Mansfield Fire Department. -OR- Consideration may be given to equivalent experience, education, and training.
  • Q endorsement or CDL A or B or equivalent on a valid driver's license.

Selected candidates are required to live within 30 minute travel time of Town of Mansfield no later than the conclusion of their probationary period.
