Position Summary
HASI is currently seeking a highly experienced senior engineering leader to join our Portfolio Managment team in Annapolis, MD. This individual will lead the technical evaluation of new investment opportunities as well as review and analyze operational issues HASI's existing investment portfolio which includes utility-scale renewable energy, behind the meter solar projects (residential, commercial and industrial, and community solar), renewable natural gas, transportation, and other emerging areas in the sustainable energy sectors.
Responsibilities
Act as a primary liaison with the asset management teams at HASI's external stakeholders - sponsors (owner/operators) and lenders/co-equity investors on all technical matters
Coordinate technical due diligence on new investments with a focus on ensuring technical and commercial viability, and providing feedback on experience from the existing portfolio to strengthen future investment underwriting.
Technical due diligence includes:
Coordination with independent engineering firms
Review/preparation of energy assessments
Review/comment of EPC, O&M, and Asset Management commercial agreements
Review of site layouts and equipment selection
Reasonableness review of production estimates, operating spending, capital budgets, useful life assumptions, and system degradation projections
Maintain and report key portfolio operational and technical performance metrics used for tracking in-house pro forma forecasting, analysis and assumption integrity.
Participate on JV Management and Operating Committees with a focus on the operational and
Technical issues related to the investments
Provide input into the financial modeling of new investments on capital and operation spending
Monitor any existing investments on technical issues with an effort to preserve value
Assist in preparation and presentation of periodic internal, leadership, and board materials
Education and Prior Wok Experience
At least 15 years of overall professional experience, with experience working for a large independent engineering/consulting firm and owning/operating renewable energy investments
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical or Industrial Engineering from a four-year accredited university.
Master's degree or PE certification preferred
Demonstrated team leadership and management skills
Specific Recommended Knowledge and Skills
Previous leadership and direct design, construction, or operations experience with solar, battery energy storage systems, wind, and/or emerging areas including renewable natural gas, hydrogen, or electric transportation
Strong experience in leading technical due diligence teams, preparing technical due diligence summaries and engineering reports, reviewing/interpreting financial models, reviewing commercial agreements, and providing input into the negotiations on technical matters
High caliber and professional interpersonal, negotiation, communication, time management and presentation skills
Advanced experience with Excel and experience in statistical analysis
Dependable, detail oriented, and reliable, excellent at taking initiative and mentoring and managing staff
Experience with negotiating and resolving troubled investments and workouts relative to technical matters
Experience analyzing and underwriting sustainable infrastructure investments, with preference for prior participation in an investment approval process
Solid working knowledge and understanding of commercial contracts, operations and maintenance, power marketing, and regulations related to North American renewable utility scale, distributed generation power, renewable natural gas, or transportation projects.
