About The Team
You'll be part of the SmartThings Edge Protocols team, responsible for integrating smart home and networking protocols into the SmartThings ecosystem as well as designing and building innovative features for smart homes. The team's current focus areas include adopting, developing, and supporting Matter within the SmartThings Hub Platform. With the momentum behind Matter after its recent launch, this is an exciting and unique opportunity to get involved and help shape the future of not only SmartThings, but the smart home industry as a whole.

As a team member, you'll be involved in the full software development lifecycle from proof-of-concept to shipping products on a project of enormous scale and potential. The majority of the development work will be application and test code in Rust with additional opportunities to work on frameworks that span cloud and mobile. You'll also debug and fix issues discovered internally and reported by external beta testers, partners and regular users.

This position is a hybrid role, based onsite 3 days a week at our office in Minneapolis, MN.

Key Responsibilities

We're looking for an Embedded Software Engineer who'll be responsible for the development of software for the adoption and integration of smart home networking protocols like Matter for the SmartThings Hub platform. In this role, you will:
  • Design and develop high-quality software in Rust, C++ and Lua
  • Participate in technical discussions with key stakeholders (engineering, product, etc.)
  • Participate in cross-functional design discussions and code reviews
  • Work with Cloud and Mobile teams to solve challenging problems and develop exciting new features
  • Collaborate with partners on new features to improve user experience

What You Bring On Day One (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Electrical/Computer Engineering
  • 2+ years of experience developing software in C++, Rust or other OOP languages
  • Experience with various software design patterns and their applications
  • Experience with and/or willingness to learn additional languages such as Lua and Rust
  • Working knowledge of source control (preferably git and GitHub/GitLab)
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to work well in a diverse, team-focused environment

Desired Skills
  • Passion for gadgets, IoT, and smart devices
  • Experience with modern IP networking
  • Experience working with communication protocols and networking technologies such as Matter, WiFi, Thread, Bluetooth Low Energy, Zigbee, Z-Wave
  • Experience writing software in Rust
  • Familiarity with an embedded Linux Environment
  • Experience working with external partners and vendors to deliver customer-facing products

Compensation for this role for a candidate based in Minneapolis is expected to be between $86,503 and $122,834. Additionally, this role is eligible for a 15% annual target bonus potential, depending on company and individual performance.
