Summary
Cardiac Catheterization/Electrophysiology Technologist performs invasive diagnostic and interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and radiology procedures. He/she is responsible for the operation and quality assurance of film/image processing, patient monitoring and the x-ray equipment. The cardiac catheterization/electrophysiology technologist participates in the daily activities of the lab by assisting with scrub, float, monitor, and imaging technology roles.
MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS: The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time.

Provides and insures quality care for patients as indicated by their clinical condition. Meets the human needs of high-risk cardiac patients by explaining, educating and reassuring the patients throughout the cath procedure. Performs in the scrub role setting up sterile field, preparing patient for exam and assisting physician during procedures. Performs in the monitor role by observing and documenting hemodynamic, EKG, and pressure waveforms. Records information related to equipment use, procedural occurrences, and complications that occur during the case. Ensures that time-outs occur prior to beginning procedures. Serves as liaison between the floor nurse and the cardiac cath lab personnel by reporting patient follow-up care post cath orders and any procedure complications. Assists in emergency situations by initiating and/or assisting in procedures described by hospital policy including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation of life threatening arrhythmias and maintaining proper documentation of emergency situations. Abides by infection control procedures for the cath lab and the medical center. Maintains information pertaining to hospital performance improvement programs. Participates in the ongoing cardiac cath lab quality control program, preventive maintenance, and performance improvement programs. Serves as lead worker after proficiency in skill assessment documented. Serves as preceptor for new employee orientation. Responsible for maintaining professional growth to include current methodology of procedures, equipment and techniques. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development of the younger to older adult; understands the range of treatment based on the patient's developmental needs.

QUALIFICATIONS: The following qualifications or equivalents are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job.

EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING: Current ACLS and BCLS. Certified or eligible RCIS preferred. Will consider RT-R with 1-2 invasive diagnostic and/or interventional cardiology procedures.

WORK TRAITS:

Ability to assess patient needs correctly and take appropriate action. Thorough knowledge of medications, emergency procedures and medical equipment. Can initiate appropriate emergency actions within scope of practice and law. Ability to work with personnel of varied training/backgrounds, i.e. rad. Tech, nurse, cardiovascular tech, etc. Good oral and written communication skills. Maintains composure during high stress situations. Knowledge of and ability to operate x-ray and patient monitoring equipment. Flexibility with work schedule. Ability to be on call.
