On the eve of the organization's 25th anniversary, we are celebrating a successful legacy that institutionalized the inherent connection between our democracy and economy. From campaign finance reform to credit card debt to student debt, Dmos has built campaigns and won structural reform that has changed the way communities wield civic, political, and economic power in this country.

Over the next three years, we will work to realize the next iteration of Dmos' legacy by transforming our strategies and organizational structure to unapologetically build power with and for Black and brown communities. As a national public policy institution, we see our role as the nexus between federal and state strategies, leveraging our policy, research, and narrative expertise to uplift and enhance the insights and experience of our state-based and grassroots partners, advancing comprehensive campaigns to realize the promise of a just, inclusive multiracial democracy and economy.

Director of Research and Data Analytics. Reporting to the Chief of Programs and Strategy, the Director of Research and Data Analytics is responsible for planning and managing the research strategies, outputs, and impact metrics for Dmos. Their main responsibilities include planning and managing ongoing research operations, developing and maintaining Dmos' research agenda, and establishing and managing all aspects of Dmos data analytics strategy. The Director of Research and Data Analytics will collaborate and coordinate work between our Economic Justice, Democracy, and Movement Building teams and with external academic, government, and peer partners.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Lead and develop Dmos research agendas and strategies, including coordination of research priorities and projects across teams.
  • Define scope, goals, and deliverables of research projects in collaboration with program teams and external stakeholders.
  • Oversee and ensure the smooth functioning of Dmos' original and applied research pipeline from proposal to publication, including supervising project timelines, progress, and deliverables. Support the research team in managing risks and problem-solving.
  • Review written content from across program areas (including blog posts, newsletters, press releases, issue briefs, etc.) for research and argument quality as well as alignment with Demos worldview and goals.
  • Help track outcomes and impacts of research and innovation activities and outputs and ensure the balance and relevancy of the research strategy and portfolio.
  • Translate research insights into actionable lessons and outputs, and ensure the production of timely, relevant, actionable, and high-quality research collateral.
  • Lead, manage, develop, retain, and supervise department staff and Interns.
  • Other responsibilities as requested by your supervisor from time to time.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following skills and experience:

Strategic Thinking and Project Management. Deep understanding of research design, implementation, and evaluation across various methodologies (e.g., surveys, experiments, case studies). Experience in leading research projects, managing timelines, budgets, and coordinating interdisciplinary teams. Proven ability to develop and execute strategies and work plans aligned with organizational objectives. Demonstrated success managing multiple complex projects at once -including balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders and priorities (e.g., academic and research experts, advocacy and media goals) and timely delivery of projects .

Data Analysis, Interpretation and Management: Ability to identify research questions, formulate hypotheses, and derive actionable insights from complex datasets. Proficiency in qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods, including statistical analysis, regression modeling, and data visualization. Expertise in managing large datasets, ensuring data integrity, and developing data governance policies. Experience with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and mapping software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for spatial analysis and visualization of data. Mastery of programming languages such as Python, R, or SQL, and familiarity with data analysis tools like SPSS, SAS, or Tableau. Understanding of ethical considerations in data collection, analysis, and reporting, ensuring compliance with privacy and regulatory standards.

Leading on Racial Equity: You have a sophisticated understanding of how race dynamics impact supervisory relationships, organizational culture, partnerships, campaigns, and coalition work, and can demonstrate a history of successfully intervening in problematic dynamics and deepening a racial justice approach within an organization, team, or campaign.

Leadership and Management. Demonstrated experience in leading and managing teams, with a focus on fostering an inclusive and high-performing organizational culture.

Writing, Editing, and Communications skills. Experience writing and/or communicating about policy ideas to a wide audience across various mediums.

Collaborative and Low Ego Approach: Experience collaborating with teams across an organization and external partners to develop and execute program strategies, as well as troubleshooting and course-correcting as needed. Committed to advancing organizational goals over personal agendas, with a focus on humility, integrity, and kindness.

The most competitive candidates will also demonstrate several of the following skills and experience:

Content Expertise. Familiarity with Demos' core issues, including democracy, economic justice, or movement building. Familiarity with the field of voting rights, civic engagement, legal frameworks, and economic justice factors, including understanding economic disparities, policies affecting marginalized communities, and strategies for promoting economic equity through data-driven approaches.

Adaptability. Capacity to thrive in a dynamic and evolving environment, with the flexibility to adjust strategies as needed.

Education. Advanced degree in Political Science, Data Science, Statistics or related field strongly preferred.

Work Location: Dmos is working to adopt a hybrid, remote-first work model with some in-person meetings taking place in the current offices in New York City or Washington, D.C. Candidates based in any continental U.S. location with the ability to travel are encouraged to apply.

Salary and Benefits: The annual salary range for this position is $163,000 - $173,000. Salary is determined based on job responsibilities and other factors determined by law. For purposes of internal equity, Demos will not negotiate salaries outside of this posted range. Dmos has a generous benefits package, which includes health insurance, dental and vision insurance, 11 paid holidays, 18 vacation days per year, 5 floating holidays per year, 12 sick days per year, paid time off the last week of August, and Dec. 24 - through the first week of January, and a voluntary 403b plan.
