Job Description

  • Provide psychiatric care including admission evaluation and follow-ups on Inpatient Units under general supervision of the collaborating physician
  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric history and psychosocial assessment
  • Perform basic psychiatric interviews to obtain historical information from patient, family and appropriate sources
  • Perform and record physical and mental status examination
  • Perform, order and interpret appropriate screening and diagnostic laboratory tests and consultations
  • Differentiate between normal and abnormal findings in the screening and assessment process to detect changes in the health and psychiatric status that requires physical intervention
  • Prescribe and order medications, therapeutics and therapeutic devices in accordance with NYS and Federal laws concerning Nurse Practitioners (subject to section 6902 (3)(b) of the NYS education Law)
  • Formulate a diagnosis based on history, mental status and other appropriate assessment and diagnostic study results
  • Conduct individual counseling and therapy, as well as, group and family therapy based on the goals and objectives of the comprehensive treatment plan and supervision
  • Order laboratory studies relating to the monitoring of psychotropic and neuroleptic drugs
  • Formulate a psychiatric plan of care within the context of Nurse Practitioner guidelines or after consultation with the collaborative physician
  • Manage the care of selected patients within protocols mutually agreed upon by nursing and medical personnel
  • Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other medical emergencies
  • Buprenorphine Treatment-completion of special training and special DEA number required
  • Participate in team meetings with treatment staff on daily basis and other duties as assigned by Unit Chief, Director of Psychiatry or their respective designee


Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse issued by the New York State Department of Education (NYSED); and
2. Current certificate as a Nurse Practitioner issued by the NYSED; and
3. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).

Department Preferences

Master's Degree in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing

Licensed to practice as a NYS Nurse Practitioner with Certification as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Required

Certification as a psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

A minimum of one-year experience as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

Familiarity with high-risk patients and cultural sensitivity in community settings.

Demonstrate advanced knowledge of psychopathology in assessing patients in need of mental health treatment, including mental status examination and diagnosis

Demonstrate advanced knowledge of psychopharmacology as it pertains to the patient's population being treated and writing prescriptions

Department Preferences

Strongly prefer National Board Certification in Psychiatric - Mental Health

In addition to base compensation, you may also receive the following based on the Collectively-Bargained Agreement:
  • An annual education differential if you currently possess an appropriate degree in nursing or an allied health field from an accredited college or university, as listed below:
    • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Bachelors in allied health field = $900
    • Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Masters in allied health field = $1,200
    • Practice or PhD in Nursing (DNP) = $2,500
  • An annual certification differential of $1,878 if you currently hold an appropriate certification that is nationally recognized in the field or area of specialization for which you are employed.
  • An annual nursing experience differential ranging from $1,097 up to $9,100 for up to 10 years of experience if you have outside nursing experience as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • For NP (PC/BH) ONLY: An annual assignment differential ranging from $10,000 up to $25,000 if assigned to a Behavioral Health department AND regularly working evenings/nights
