Minimum of five years of successful classroom experience in the designated subject area

SELECTION:
The position is filled by the Board of Education upon recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools

FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
  • Provide input from other building-level teachers in setting county curricular goals within their specific content area.
  • Encourage and coordinate the participation by teachers and pupils in contests, fairs, and projects within their subject area or that are sponsored by civic organizations and school clubs.
  • Serve with other schools' chairpersons as members of the textbook selection committee in their academic area(s) as well as county curriculum committees.
  • Assist in evaluating and advising concerning strengths and weaknesses in curricular matters as reflected in students' test results for his/her school and when necessary, its feeder schools. Examples of such tests are ACT, CTBS, SAT and PSAT/NMSQT.
  • Attend meeting (at least monthly) with school administration to discuss and review department directions, objectives and goals.
  • Conduct meetings with his/her department teachers to discuss problems and plan strategies in their curriculum area(s).
  • Serve on other county/statewide committees concerning curriculum in their area.
  • Attend conferences and workshops to keep abreast of recent trends and developments in their academic areas and communicates these experienced to members of the department.
  • Communicate to the principal the concerns and needs of his/her department.
  • Communicate to the members of the department the concerns and needs of the administration.
  • Works continuously to improve the curriculum and the instruction within his/her department.
  • Help to motivate the members of his/her curriculum and the instruction within his/her department.
  • Explain to members of the department state regulation concerning learning outcomes, and works with teachers to see that these are carried out.
