Job Description

Position Relationship:
  • Reports to HAIS Implementation Team
  • Coordinates with HAIS Governance Board, Staff, Families and Students
  • Is co-supervised by the HAIS Governance Board and HAIS Principal

The Hmong American Immersion School (HAIS) is a 4K-5th grade charter school that will focus on academic excellence utilizing Hmong culture, history, language, and next-generation socially and emotionally intelligent citizens. HAIS is unique to traditional elementary schools in that it focuses on academic excellence utilizing Hmong culture, history, and language, and creating next-generation socially and emotionally intelligent citizens. Hmong culture and history are infused within the themes of reading, writing, social studies, music, art, and physical education. The Hmong heritage language will be a standalone class. The Hmong cultural practices of collectiveness will be a vehicle to the leadership attributes being taught. As students move through HAIS's 4K-5 educational programming, their learning culminates with a stronger identity, leadership, academic performance, and community connection.

The word "immersion" means being fully surrounded by something. In schools, immersion programs use a specific language for most, if not all, instruction. In the US, Hmong language learning typically follows two paths: fluency in both Hmong and English or mainly English with some Hmong classes. The Hmong American Immersion School (HAIS) will offer a unique blend of these approaches. While most subjects will be taught in English, daily Hmong language classes will equip students to speak, read, and write Hmong, while also fostering cultural understanding. The Hmong heritage language class will be part of music, art, and physical education essentials.

The Hmong American Immersion School is designed to be especially welcoming to students who are multilingual and other underserved students in our community. By prioritizing both Hmong language and cultural studies alongside a strong English foundation, HAIS aims to:
  • Boost academic success for all students, especially those who may be navigating language barriers.
  • Enrich the educational landscape by offering a unique and diverse learning option.
  • Cultivate a supportive environment where all students feel a sense of belonging and experience well-being.
The uniqueness of HAIS is that there is no established Hmong curriculum in publication. The HAIS Governance Board will hire an Impact Director and also seek out educational consultant services for the research and development of the HAIS Hmong language curriculum, integration of Hmong culture and history into content areas (ELA, math, science, social studies, art, music, physical education) and provide professional development on the immersion of the Hmong culture to HAIS educators. The Impact Director and consultant services or contracted service positions for HAIS were made possible by a 5-year DPI Sub-Grant up to $1.5 million.
