POSITION: Dean of Students/Director of Athletics

PRIMARY FUNCTION: The high school athletic director is responsible for coordinating and managing the high school athletic program. The athletic director has responsibility for scheduling competitions, supervision and evaluation of coaches, and the overall successful running of the high school athletic program. The dean of students assists the building administration in all areas of student management. This includes, but is not limited to, issues related to attendance and discipline. The dean of students is responsible for contributing to the safe, orderly environment at the school.
EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: State of Connecticut Certification. Candidates with an Intermediate Administrator Certification (092) strongly preferred, HOWEVER, candidates without 092, must complete and obtain their certification within a year of hire date.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Candidate preferably has qualifications to include experience as a teacher and coach at the high school level; experience with managing budgets, evaluating personnel, and coordinating schedules with multiple vendors/entities. Candidate preferably also has awareness of district, state and federal policies and guidelines as they relate to student discipline and attendance.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Dean of Students
- Works with other administrators in developing reasonable rules and restorative practices regarding student behavior.
- Contributes to the development and implementation of the school's behavior plan in accordance with Region 14 Board of Education policies.
- Enforces all school rules and policies and administers appropriate discipline as necessary.
- Monitors student school attendance including day's tardy, days absent, and early dismissals.
- Establishes and maintains sound relationships with students, parents, fellow teachers, non-teaching personnel, and other administrators.
- Brings to the attention of appropriate school personnel those students who may require the assistance of district specialists because of attendance or behavioral concerns.
- Works in collaboration with individuals and agencies outside the school that are involved with students. These may include JRB, probation officers, the courts, and private counselors.
- Coordinates the hiring and training of all coaches, ticket takers, timers, and scorers.
- Ensures that all coaches follow district and CIAC policies and procedures
- Ensures that CIAC rules are shared and followed by all sports
- Provides formative and summative evaluation of coaches in conjunction with the high school administration
- Supervises and attends most home athletic contests
- Coordinates use of the building for athletics and other events
- Ensures the security and scheduling of custodians during athletic events (to include police, fire and ambulance as needed)
- Prepares and maintains the overall athletic budget on a yearly basis
- Conforms to district procedures for the purchase, care and storage of athletic equipment and game uniforms
- Supervises the collection and deposit of all gate receipts
- Ensures that all insurance claims for students involved in athletics are completed accurately in conjunction with the Nurse's office
- Completes and publishes athletic schedules for each season on the CIAC Website
- Arranges appropriate transportation for all athletic events
- Publishes and maintains the student-athlete and coaches handbooks
- Communicates with parents about athletic issues; meets with parents as needed to address issues and concerns
- Attends all Berkshire League and CIAC committee meetings and shares pertinent information
- Completes other duties as assigned to ensure safe and effective supervision and management of the athletic program
