The Manager of the Graphics/Engineering Department is responsible for overseeing the design, development, and production of all graphic elements and engineering projects related to label manufacturing. This role requires a blend of creative vision, technical acumen, and strong leadership skills to ensure the department operates efficiently and produces high-quality work that meets client specifications.

The Manager of the Graphics/Engineering Department is responsible for overseeing the design, development, and production of all graphic elements and engineering projects related to label manufacturing. This role requires a blend of creative vision, technical acumen, and strong leadership skills to ensure the department operates efficiently and produces high-quality work that meets client specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
Design Review, Approval and Cost Estimation:
- Evaluate and Approve designs before they go to Print ensuring they meet guidelines and technical specifications
- Make necessary adjustments if needed and collaborate with designers on adjustments and improvements, when necessary, within the department.
- Ensure all files are prepared and optimized for printing, including color correction, trapping, and image resolution and all files are compatible with the correct printing equipment and software.
- Manage the proofing process, including digital proofs, physical proofs, and work directly with clients to resolve issues and obtain approvals.
- Manage and maintain detailed technical specifications and guidelines for all products and services, as well as manage any customer libraries and needed.
- Calculate costs associated with label materials, printing processes, finishing, and any additional services required for production.
- Maintain/update CERM records customer estimates including historical cost data specific to label manufacturing.
Leadership and Management:
- Manage Inks and Pre-Press Process to ensure they meet guidelines and technical standards for productions
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of graphic designers and other technicians, approximately 2-4 employees.
- Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment.
- Manage department budgets, resources, and timelines.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback.
Project Management:
- Oversee all graphic design and engineering projects from concept to completion.
- Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
- Coordinate with other departments to align project requirements and deliverables.
- Implement and maintain project management tools and methodologies.
Technical Expertise:
- Stay updated with industry trends, tools, and technologies.
- Ensure the team uses the latest software and techniques for design and engineering.
- Provide technical guidance and problem-solving support to the team.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
Client Interaction:
- Work closely with the sales and customer service teams to understand client needs and expectations.
- Participate in client meetings and presentations as required.
- Ensure client feedback is incorporated into the design and production process.
- Maintain strong client relationships through excellent communication and service.
Quality Assurance:
- Establish and enforce quality control processes and standards.
- Conduct regular reviews and audits of work produced by the department.
- Address and resolve any quality issues promptly.
Innovation and Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes.
- Encourage the team to explore new ideas and innovative solutions.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the department.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role within the label manufacturing industry.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Proficiency in graphic design and engineering software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD).
- Excellent project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong understanding of printing processes and label manufacturing techniques.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to producing high-quality work.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements in the labeling industry.
- Experience with CERM Management Information Systems in the label industry, a plus.
Work Environment:
- Office setting with regular interaction in production areas.
- Frequent travel will be required between Safford and Chandler location, and potentially to attend client meetings and industry events.
