Job Description
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
The Director of Equity and Wellness oversees the equity and wellness of our students, staff, and community. The Director supervises the district's mental health staff, student support programs such as nursing, and oversees equity policies, practices, and data. This position is part of the department of Student Services.
IMPROVING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY
- Assists in ensuring well-articulated programs and services for students in need of social/emotional and/or mental health supports.
- Oversees coordination of counseling, psychology, social work, and nursing support in relation to student, family, school, and community needs.
- Leads implementation of the K-12 Counseling Plan and program of study, ensuring alignment with state guidelines and mandates, and designs appropriate professional learning.
- Facilitates key committees and/or subcommittees tied to equity and wellness. Leads and coordinates alignment, development, implementation and evaluation of goals and strategies with the Office of Instruction.
- Coordinates with the Directors of Instruction, Directors of Student Services, and building Principals to monitor and support IST and PST processes and serves as a resource to building principals and other leadership staff on academic, mental health, social emotional, and absenteeism interventions for students.
- Facilitates and coordinates meetings for Counselors, Psychologists, Social Workers, Substance Prevention Counselor, nurses, and Career Center staff. Collaborates with the Director of Student Services in planning and leading student services department meetings.
- With the Directors of Instruction, assess and develop curriculum related to social-emotional learning, culturally responsive teaching, restorative, and trauma informed practices.
- Provides consult to building administrators regarding school counseling matters and services, including behavioral management and behavioral intervention plans.
EQUITY
- Serves as the District's 504 Compliance Officer. Provides oversight of and assures implementation of policies and procedures for 504 compliance, referral, and alignment of practices for students. Monitors all 504 plans in terms of district and State policies and regulations. Chairs manifestation team meetings for students with 504 plans.
- Closely monitor all data relative to equity and wellness and provide oversight and recommendations directly to appropriate leadership and staff regarding these areas.
- Leads and support district initiatives related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Evaluates district policies, practices, and data sources to identify systemic issues related to equity, bias and access.
- Oversees the district's substance abuse counselor to ensure consistent implementation of district's substance abuse prevention programs.
- Oversees the district's nursing program to ensure vaccination, school physical, hearing and vision screening compliance and ensures communication to building level administrators on this matter.
- In conjunction with the School Nurse Supervisor, problem-solve staffing needs.
- Oversees district's trauma informed care; including analyzing the Youth Risk Behavior Survey and other data sources to inform department goals and action steps.
- Lead and act as the TIG (Trauma Illness and Grief) and TCIS (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention in Schools) coordinator for the district.
- Coordinates, with other administrators, actions of the districtwide threat assessment team and serves as a standing member on the team.
- Consults with appropriate staff members concerning instructional or adjustment issues of individual students.
- Shares case management with Directors of Student Services of students in general education out-of-district placements.
- Oversees and implements Urban Suburban new student orientation and coordinates district based Urban Suburban events with principals and the Urban Suburban office.
- Assists with the development and implementation of professional learning for counseling, psychologist, social work, and nursing personnel.
- In cooperation with the Director of Student Services and principals, supervises and evaluates the performance of Substance Prevention Counselor, Nurse Supervisor and others as designated by Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources.
- Assists in the recruitment and selection of personnel as directed by the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources.
- In cooperation with Directors of Student Services, establishes, and maintains collaborative relationships with county agencies (e.g. Trauma, Illness, Grief Team, School/Hospital Collaborative, and the county Directors of Counseling (DOCS), professional organizations, and NYSED to support and expand understanding and practice of school counseling, social emotional learning approaches, and restorative practices aligned with WICSD strategic initiatives.
- Assists with the alignment of CPS reporting practices and consults with principals on CPS referrals. Maintains appropriate data base of district referrals and coordinates annual updates to research-based practices and resources.
- Confers with parents concerning matters related to education, mental health, and intervention programs, as well as progress of students toward achievement of the standards.
- Collaborates with the Directors of Student Services in developing budget items related to Counseling, Psychology, Social Work and nursing.
- Participates in activities, which will lead to continued professional growth, including attendance at conferences, seminars and workshops.
- Assist in the development of District policies, regulations and procedures related to the Student Services Office.
- Other duties may be required. Subject to the approval of the Superintendent.

- The Director of Equity and Wellness is responsible to the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources. The Assistant Superintendent for Instruction will serve as the indirect supervisor.
