Under the general supervision of the District Administrator, the Special Education Director formulates special education programs and policies relating to the education and training of students with disabilities that maintains compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, The No Child Left Behind Act, and Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act. Coordinates with outside agencies to meet needs (i.e. Indian-Child Welfare, Head Start Centers, law enforcement agencies, and County Social Service).

Essential Functions:
  • Maintain compliance with federal and state special education regulations.
  • Monitor procedures for the operation of special education programs.
  • Develop the local special education plan in order to secure funding for special education programs.
  • Supervise the eligibility determination of students referred for special education.
  • Supervise and coordinate IEP procedures to facilitate appropriate services for students with disabilities.
  • Coordinate instructional services provided to identified students with disabilities.
  • Inform the Director of Building and Grounds of the transportation needs of students with disabilities.
  • Serve as the Section 504 Coordinator for the District.
  • Work with District Administrator and special education teachers to assure appropriate services to identified students.
  • Articulate pupil services and special education with regular education and guidance personnel.
  • Assist District Administrator and Finance Manager in preparation of a budget for special education and pupil services.
  • Prepare forms for local usage that may be required to ensure compliance with state and federal laws pertaining to special education.
  • Prepare reports required by DPI concerning pupil services and special education.
  • Organize and identify staff development needs of special education staff.
  • Identify special education summer school needs.
  • Supervise and evaluate special education staff including teachers, pupil services staff, and paraprofessionals.

Equipment:
  • Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements:
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Appropriate certification as required by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) - 5080.
  • Effective leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for interacting with students, teachers, and parents are paramount.
  • Must be knowledgeable of best practices in special education instruction, teaching methodology, behavior management of students with disabilities, and the general education curriculum for students ages 0-21.
  • Knowledge of Wisconsin's Model Academic Standards.
  • Should be skilled in word processing, database, and presentation software.


Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:
  • Works in standard office and school building environments.

Certification/License:
  • Wisconsin State Certification as a Special Education Director: 5080 - Director of Spec Ed and Pupil Services
  • Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation
Education:
  • Master's required.
  • Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

Salary Range: $100,000 - $125,000 and based on education and years of experience.
