Position Summary: The Controller is responsible for overseeing the day to day accounting, finance, and general business operations of the Erie School District. The Controller will ensure accurate financial reporting, maintain required accounting practices, and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. The Controller will manage a team of accountants and finance professionals to support general business operations, reporting, and compliance functions including accounts payable, receivable, and supporting all District departments with any related needs when appropriate.

Salary: $95,000

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Requirements:
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role. Experience in a school district or public sector is highly desirable, but not required.
  • Proficiency in accounting software, ERP systems, and Microsoft Office Suite. A greater than basic knowledge of Excel is required.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop a team. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic knowledge of GAAP and/or GASB standards is required. An understanding of local, state, and federal financial regulations applicable to school districts is desirable.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the monthly accounting close process to ensure accurate accounting records are maintained.
  • Assist in preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for the School Board
  • Oversee the finance and purchasing staff to ensure accurate and timely production of all financial information.
  • Assist with the preparation of the annual budget, working closely with department heads and the CFO to develop realistic and achievable financial plans.
  • Assist with the year-end close process, ensuring all financial records are accurate and complete.
  • Prepare for and coordinate audits, working closely with external auditors to provide necessary documentation and explanations.
  • Assist with the implementation of financial policies and procedures to ensure consistency and compliance with best practices.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies within the finance and accounting functions.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations, including state and federal financial reporting requirements.
  • Stay updated on changes in regulations and accounting standards that may impact the district's financial operations.
  • Foster a collaborative and productive work environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the CFO or Superintendent, supporting the overall financial health and stability of the school district.

Special Requirements

Physical Demands: Physical requirements are the same as those encountered in the course of a typical professional office environment.

Work Environment: School and office with potential need to travel among schools, and various locations within the City of Erie. Occasional travel to relevant professional conferences and meetings outside of the District.
