Purpose of the Position:
This position will lead scientific and management activities of the FARM radar and instrument facility.
This person will lead scientific projects, analysis, and related activities and supervise other facility scientists supporting these activities. This person will manage facility operations and supervise facility staff supporting these activities. This person will interact with prospective and current users of the facility, facilitating project planning and execution and data usage. This person will lead and supervise educational and outreach activities, present at scientific and other conferences, and publish results in refereed literature. This person will lead and collaborate on proposals for external funding. This person will participate in other community activities such as journal editing, scientific panels, and the like.
This position will travel to field projects and support the facility systems for much of the duration of these projects.
Duties/Responsibilities
Lead scientific projects, analysis, and related activities and supervise other facility scientists supporting these activities.
Manage facility operations and supervise facility staff supporting these activities.
Interact with prospective and current users of the facility, facilitating project planning and execution and data usage.
Lead and supervise educational and outreach activities, present at scientific and other conferences and publish results in refereed literature.
Lead and collaborate on proposals for external funding. This person will participate in other community activities such as journal editing, scientific panels and the like.
Lead scientific and management activities of the FARM radar and instrument facility.
Travel, domestically and internationally, to field projects and support the facility systems for duration of sponsored projects.
Minimum Requirements:
ScD degree in Meteorology
25+ years of experience in the areas of inventing, developing, maintaining, improving, managing, and operating mobile mesonet, deployable instrumentation systems similar to the FARM Facility.
Experience leading and/or participating and/or planning related to a significant number of large/small/educational field projects, including both domestically and internationally over at least six continents.
Experience leading radar and other meteorological data analysis including the use of mobile radar data, dual-polarization data, dual-Doppler and bistatic multiple-Doppler data, Solo, GURU, and OPAWS
Experience programming in FORTRAN, C, Assembly Code, for scientific and engineering analysis and signal processing, Linux/Unix, Windows, DOS
Authored peer-reviewed scientific publications, presenting at national and international conferences, in the areas of radar technology, tornadoes, hurricanes, and other phenomena.
Experience obtaining external (government) funding for scientific studies, and FARM-facility type base support and deployments.
Experience conducting outreach and communication of scientific and FARM-Facility type endeavors domestically and internationally, including extensive experience with local, national and international media, and educational outreach at the K-12 and college/university levels.
Desired Qualifications:
Driver's license allowing up to 26,000 lb. vehicles.
Ability to travel internationally, including immunization requirements.
Exceptional communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work harmoniously with a wide range of constituencies, including faculty, staff, and students.
Awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural and linguistic differences.
