Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

This Hydraulics Engineer position serves as the Structures Office expert in the specialization if hydraulics and hydrology. This position works to meet the requirements of the Federal Highway Administration (FWHA) scour management mandates, handles specialized studies, and trains bridge office staff.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Maintains an inventory of Scour Critical Bridges on Interstate, US and K-routes.
  • Analyzes and designs complex highway drainage projects and related engineering plans for bridges and related drainage structures.
  • Prepares and assembles engineering data required to select and economical and efficient drainage structure for each stream crossing.
  • Develops hydraulic engineering reports and maintains relevant standards and portions of Design Manual.
  • Mentors bridge designers in the Bridge Office in hydraulic analysis and design for transportation facilities.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Four years of experience in Civil Engineering.
  • Valid Driver's License at time of appointment.
  • Professional Engineering License recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.
  • Thorough knowledge of hydrology and hydraulic applications to transportation facilities.
Education
  • Graduate from an ABET (Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology) accredited engineering school.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Six years of professional experience, with four years of bridge experience and two years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge in structural design, PC and engineering workstation software, engineering workstation and GIS systems and software, ArcGIS, and computer applications related to Civil Engineering.
  • Technical report writing skills, management skills, and good verbal communication skills.
  • Masters level degree in hydraulics related specialty.
