Job Description
Physician Assistants (PA) with the Critical Care Medicine Service (CCMS) work collaboratively alongside an Intensivist physician in all aspects of the diagnosis, treatment and management of critically ill patients in the ICU setting. This includes taking a medical history, performing physical examination, and compiling medical data in the development of a treatment plan. The APP will assist the physician in leading and directing ICU staff in individual patient care as well as following best-practice guidelines for the maintenance of quality outcomes.
Responsibilities
CCMS PAs work directly with the physician, under supervision commensurate with the individual APP skill level and experience, as well as the individual patient needs. They gain experience in medical, surgical, cardiac and neurologic intensive care units.
CCMS PAs routinely participate in and often lead interdisciplinary rounds and family discussions.
Under physician supervision, CCMS PAs are trained in and routinely perform endotracheal intubation, ventilator management, and arterial and central venous catheter placement. Other procedures/skills available include ECMO management, bedside ultrasound, lumbar puncture, chest tube placement, bladder catheterization and orogastric/nasogastric tube placement.
CCMS PAs also play a pivotal role in the maintenance of Our Lady of the Lake's Comprehensive Stroke Program.
This is a full-time evening position, 12-hour shifts (7-on, 7-off).
Qualifications
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Physician Assistant Medicine or Health Sciences.
Physician Assistant License from Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners and Certification by a recognized national professional accrediting organization. Current BLS Certfication; NCCPA-National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants
