The Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) will be a clinical faculty member appointed in the Tulane University School of Medicine Department of Neurology. The LCSW will support the Healthy Brain Aging Initiative at University Medical Center. Through their partnership with LCMC Health, Tulane and LSU Neurology faculty are collaborating to build the region's only multi-institutional healthy brain aging initiative, and the largest and most comprehensive program in the Gulf South region. The Initiative includes a dedicated team of neurologists, neuropsychologists/psychometrists, advanced practice providers, social workers, geriatricians, and neuroscientists, aiming to promote healthy brain aging through its Center for Alzheimer's Prevention, its Center for Memory Disorders, and its Center for Movement Disorders. The three Centers are supported by a four-pillared approach of prevention, treatment, support, and research. The LCSW will support patients seen in the Center for Alzheimer's Prevention (asymptomatic, at risk for cognitive decline and dementia) by providing lifestyle coaching to promote adherence to the Mediterranean diet, aerobic fitness, cognitive training, restorative sleep, and other brain healthy habits. This will also include management of anxiety or depressive disorders. The LCSW will support patients seen in the Center for Memory Disorders (symptomatic, including Alzheimer's and related disorders) by providing information regarding dementia services and resources in the community, providing psychosocial counseling to ease mental health or caregiver burden, and organizing and leading support groups. Types of billable clinical services may include urgent walk-in assessments, consultations, individual psychotherapy, or group therapy. The LCSW will similarly support patients seen in the Center for Movement Disorders (including Parkinson's disease and related disorders), including resources mobilization, and providing psychosocial counseling and caregiver support. As a faculty member in Neurology, the LCSW will participate in didactic educational programs for medical students, residents, faculty, and staff, and lecture on topics such as social determinants of health, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. The LCSW may also serve on committees in the Department of Neurology or School of Medicine and contribute to the clinical research studies of the Healthy Brain Aging Initiative. The LCSW will engage community partners in healthy brain aging and participate in community outreach.
Qualifications
Work attributes include: Ability to protect confidentiality and meeting all ethical standards associated with the practice of social work within a clinical neurology context Strong case formulation, assessment and treatment skills, including the ability to understand transference and countertransference in working clinically with a diversity of clients, issues and levels of impairment Outstanding oral and written communication skills, able to dialogue effectively with a wide range of students, faculty and staff Ability to effectively utilize an electronic medical records system Ability to take the lead when appropriate, both administratively and clinically Ability to collaborate collegially with a multidisciplinary staff, both within the Neurology department and throughout the healthcare community Ability to engage in an ongoing pursuit of self-knowledge and understanding of own personal factors affecting clinical work
Required Education and/or Experience Master of Social Work degree with current LCSW license Five years of clinical experience, preferably relating to resource mobilization, counseling, and elder care Experience participating as a member of an interdisciplinary team
Desirable Additional Qualifications
Experience with mindfulness and meditation as treatment modalities
