Full Time

The Budget Director reports to the Vice President for Finance & Administration and provides support to the overall development, reporting, operations, and policies and procedures for University budgets. This position provides essential analysis and presentation of financial data in support of annual institution budget review processes and regularly presents financial information to the Vice President and President of the University for strategic decision making.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and submits University's annual operating budget request to the state
  • Provides executive staff of the University with financial information necessary for effective decision making and planning
  • Monitors state appropriation of funds for fiscal management
  • Develops and monitors $110 million University operating budget and $30 million auxiliary budgets, including Residence Life, Parking, Student Recreation Center, University Center, Bookstore, and others
  • Maintains position control system to ensure personnel transactions are within budgeted limits
  • Reviews and projects University's total expenditures and auxiliary service budgets
  • Provides schedules and budgeting data to external auditors
  • Compiles and analyzes financial aid information
  • Coordinates the operation of automated budgeting systems to support the University's budget process
  • Supervises Budget Office operations including 2-4 staff positions

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business management, accounting, finance, or business-related field; Master's degree is a plus
  • Knowledge of university budgeting procedures, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) principles
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience, Higher Education is a plus
  • Progressive work experience in forecasting and compiling large scale budgets
  • Excellent financial, statistical and analytical skills with the ability to define, analyze, and formulate solutions to complex budgeting needs
  • Ability to organize and present financial data to University executive staff
  • Knowledge of fund accounting principles and practices
  • Demonstrable proficiency in querying databases and generating reports using various programs including Microsoft Access and Excel
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision and frequent interruptions
  • Demonstrated history of creating and maintaining positive work environments through coaching, developing, and leading teams to achieve common goals
  • Proficiency working with an Enterprise Resource Planning System; Ellucian Banner ERP experience is a plus
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of customer service
