Job Description

The position will serve an important role within an emerging unit; thus, we are interested in candidates who are entrepreneurial and have a deep interest in establishing new systems, laying foundation for future growth, and identifying efficiencies of scale. The candidate will demonstrate the ability to manage competing priorities and communicate and coordinate across a wide array of audiences. Relevant experience within a higher education and/or non-profit environment and experience working with external stakeholders is highly preferred.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Manager will guide and oversee strategy and implementation for all Studios communications. The Communications Manager will identify and implement strategies to increase reach and growth among target audiences via communications channels, events, convenings, and related efforts. The Communications Manager will establish and maintain a consistent Studios voice while also increasing awareness and reach of the unit's brand and impact.

Working Environment

  • ASU Learning Transformation Studios is based in Los Angeles, CA
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field AND five years of related experience, including three years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

ASU Learning Transformation Studios (ASU Unit based in Los Angeles, CA)
In support of ASU's charter, the Learning Transformation Studios was established to facilitate enhanced educational success at all levels through the formation of networks focused on accelerating innovation in teaching and learning throughout Los Angeles, California, and beyond. The work underway involves a number of key efforts that are grounded in cross-sector partnerships, strategic initiatives, and leading and facilitating thematic action-focused convenings, discussions, and events. Additional areas of work will include research/evaluation and dissemination, as well as policy-focused activities.
Communications is a core pillar of the Studios' approach to learning transformation. ASU's success in Los Angeles depends on its credibility, partnerships, and reputation - all of which require strategic communication to build awareness and trust with California-based stakeholders.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated high-quality storytelling and writing skills for various purposes and audiences.
  • Evidence of a Bachelor's or Masters degree in Communication, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience in analytics-driven SEO and marketing strategies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of media relations and social media management.
  • Experience with digital media and UX tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro X, Podcasting, HTML, WordPress).
  • Facility with project management and related tools (e.g., Excel, Notion, Monday).
  • Familiarity with AI strategies and tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, etc.).
  • Ability to establish systems and processes to promote efficiencies.
  • Evidence of work that requires organizational skills, with an ability to manage and execute multiple tasks and projects simultaneously while thriving in an entrepreneurial, dynamic environment.
  • Evidence of effective communications with ability to convey information concisely and influence stakeholders.
  • Interest in K-16 education, innovation, entrepreneurship.
  • Demonstrated success implementing a comprehensive communications strategy leading to successful audience engagement, increasing organizational visibility and positive reputation.
  • Demonstrated success growing and sustaining demographically diverse audiences through the implementation of differentiated and innovative communication strategies.
  • Experience in graphic design and video production.

Essential Duties

General Communications Duties
  • Support development and implementation of a comprehensive multi-channel communications strategy to promote Studios' initiatives and increase visibility and reputation.
  • Establish metrics for growth and reach among target audiences.
  • Establish content management systems and workflows.
  • Produce and manage the development and distribution of all communications materials, including editorial, visual, digital, and print content (e.g., collateral materials, website, social media).
  • Develop a consistent brand voice and maintain brand integrity across all platforms.
  • Build and nurture relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets and relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Studios and ASU colleagues to create compelling content that aligns with the overall communications strategy.
  • Support events, conferences, and similar external efforts by writing high-quality content, editing, and producing collateral to promote events through various channels.
  • Build awareness and consensus on a cross-functional team and across ASU to leverage communications strategies to achieve organizational goals.
Website and Social Media Channels
  • Establish, maintain, and grow Studios' presence across digital platforms to increase engagement and reach among target audiences.
  • Manage and update the Studios website, ensuring content is current, compelling, and accessible.
  • Create and maintain content calendars for all platforms.
  • Develop and implement digital campaigns to increase online visibility and engagement.

Analytics, Data Management, and Reporting
  • Establish data gathering workflows, manage and monitor engagement (e.g., dashboard), and use data-driven insights to make informed decisions.
  • Provide regular reports on communication activities, outcomes, and recommendations for improvement.

Project Management
  • Manage and report on projects to ensure goals are achieved.
  • Utilize project management tools for all communications projects.
Budget Support
  • Support budget development, compliance, procurement, and reporting for all communications-related activities.
