Spirit Maine's manufacturing facility has been a leading solutions provider of high temperature materials and composites for more than 50 years, serving the Department of Defense and NASA. The focus in Maine is on multidirectional reinforced Carbon/Carbon (C/C) and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) that enable high-temperature components such as: thermal protection systems, re-entry vehicle nose tips as well as rocket motor throats and nozzles.

Our materials are being used on ground-breaking space initiatives such as the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle and the heat shield for NASA's Mars 2020 mission, important missile programs, airfoils in commercial and military jet engines, and as lightweight armor for U.S. military ground vehicles.

Your role: Spirit Maine is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer with a drive for success to add to their Engineering team! This is a new role where you are responsible for the support of current production systems and future improvements in safety, quality, cost, and cycle time. As the Manufacturing Engineer, you will also coordinate and direct projects, make detailed plans to accomplish goals and direct the integration of technical activities, such as, process improvements, equipment installation/ modification, and material system development. There will be opportunities to get hands-on experience in a wide range of manufacturing and engineering disciplines.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and sustain policies and procedures for the technical work performed in the production facility
  • Identify, design, and implement process improvements in assigned areas of responsibility using Lean and Six Sigma tools
  • Provide technical support for 7x24 manufacturing facility in assigned areas of responsibility
  • Analyze technology requirements, resource needs, and schedules to assess and plan project execution
  • Perform root cause analysis for failure investigations and other data analysis tasks, make data-driven decisions
  • Support non-conformance program and implement preventive actions
  • Write periodic reports or oral presentations to management and customers on specific projects
  • Design and develop new equipment for future production systems
  • Ensure that health and safety policies are followed
  • Apply quality standards to ensure compliance with certification requirements in plant applications
  • Work with internal and external customers to develop and qualify process changes and provide technical services

What we need from you:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemical engineering, Materials Engineering, or closely related discipline
  • 3-5 years of related experience in manufacturing and process engineering preferred
  • Demonstrated results in technical problem solving and product/process development is required
  • Strong work ethic
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with GD&T and engineering drawings
  • Experience with industrial tools and equipment preferred
  • Experience in aerospace/high-temperature composites, textiles or industrial engineering systems would distinguish the candidate
  • Exposure to automated and/or robotic systems
  • Familiarity with Lean manufacturing principles desired
  • Interest and knowledge in composites and ceramics, or general material science is preferred
