POSITION SUMMARY
The Manager, Basic & Translational Research is responsible for leading projects and activities related to the Society's basic and translational research portfolio within Scientific Affairs. This consists of staffing the activities of the ASH Committee on Scientific Affairs, Scientific Committees, relevant subcommittees, task forces and working groups; managing projects (focused on basic and translational research topics) stemming from committee initiatives; monitoring federal policies relevant to the Society's mission; and providing internal scientific and technical expertise to inform programmatic activities. The Manager, Basic & Translational Research works directly with member volunteers, the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) and the Deputy Director of Scientific Affairs to provide policy analysis and recommendations pertaining to scientific and regulatory areas of importance to the Society.

PHYSICAL REQUREMENTS
ASH has a hybrid work environment, with core in-office days for all ASH staff on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and telework on Mondays and Fridays for eligible positions. The Society's headquarters is in Washington, DC, and is within walking distance of several Metro stations on the Blue/Orange/Silver and Red lines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteer engagement
- Provides direct support to basic and translational research themed working groups, task forces and subcommittees under the purview of Scientific Affairs.
- organizing conference calls and meetings,
- developing background materials, reports, minutes, and
- executing action items
- Engages with volunteers to gather information for ASH's policy statements related to basic/translational research.
- Works with ASH's 18 Scientific Committee members on committee nominations and honorific award nominations.
Special Scientific Projects
- Provides direct logistical support to the CSO on updates to ASH's Research Agendas.
- In collaboration with the CSO and Deputy Director, Scientific Affairs, manages the execution of strategic programs/projects resulting from the activities of the above stated volunteer groups.
- Works with the CSO, Deputy Director, Scientific Affairs, and ASH member volunteers to:
- Review current agendas and committee mandates; work with committees to find consensus on topics to add, renew or retire.
- Prepare written correspondence and reports to Society committees and to the membership at large.
- Leads internal and external collaboration efforts toward the development and execution of strategic programs/projects proposed by volunteer groups under their purview (e.g., reference materials, research proposals) for the broader hematology basic and translational science community.
- Collaborates with the Manager, Science Education on the development of scientific content proposed by basic and translational research themed volunteer groups under their purview.
- Partners with other ASH departments (including the ASH Research Collaborative) and/or outside vendors as needed to achieve goals for strategic programs/projects.
Science Policy
- In collaboration with Government Relations, assists in tracking science policy related news and upcoming research funding announcements (RFAs) that ASH should be aware of in the areas of basic/translational research and artificial intelligence.
- In collaboration with the Deputy Director, Scientific Affairs, develops policy statements and coordinate responses to Requests for Information (RFIs) in areas of scientific priority for the Society.
Management Responsibilities
- Develops and manages budgets related to assigned portfolio.
- Develops and reviews standard operating procedures related to projects under their purview and makes recommendations for streamlining where appropriate.
- Undertakes other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED
- Bachelor's degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, or related field. Advanced degree preferred.
- At least five years' experience with programmatic administrative support and project management
- Ability to organize and execute multiple high-quality programs and activities on budget and according to established timelines.
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple deadlines.
- Experience with working across multiple teams, overseeing the engagement of consultants/vendors, and working effectively with volunteer leaders.
- Knowledge of government agency funding and policy structure (NIH, NSF, etc.) and RFIs and RFAs.
- Ability to establish working relationships with diverse groups, including scientists and physicians.
- Experience in handling confidential information.
- Excellent time management, organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Experience in the use of databases (knowledge of Personify, Salesforce databases preferred).
- Prior experience in a not-for-profit environment preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUREMENTS
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to use computers, telephones, and other office equipment.
- May require some out-of-town work travel.
