Job Description

With a population of over 33,000, Brooklyn Center is a vibrant first-ring suburb in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Metropolitan Area. Brooklyn Center is the most diverse community in Minnesota and boasts a plethora of ethnically diverse small and micro-businesses and shops along with an extensive walking/biking trail system connecting the city with the Mississippi River and neighboring communities.

The Deputy City Manager is a newly created position in the City of Brooklyn Center. Reporting directly to the City Manager, this role will be pivotal in both strategic and administrative capacities, enhancing operational excellence and improving service delivery.

Work includes overseeing the Department of Administration, including the Office of the City Clerk, IT, and communications, partnering with other department heads, and engaging with City Council and members of the community. In the absence of the City Manager, the Deputy City Manager will interact with department heads and other employees to carry out directives established by City Manager and the City Council.

The person in this role needs to cultivate strong and trusting relationships with employees, citizens, businesses, elected officials, and community groups and agencies. They are skilled at being able to work successfully with a wide variety of people and are committed to actualizing diversity, equity and inclusion. Compensation and Benefits

The starting salary range for this position will be $127,442 - $156,219 depending on candidate education and experience. The city offers a full range of employee benefits, including participation in the Minnesota Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA).

Desired Qualifications

Qualified candidates will possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public administration, business administration, political science, or a closely related field; and five years of supervisory experience leading a productive, collaborative, and inclusive team, along with five years of experience in the creation and execution of programs in the areas of strategic planning, process improvement, and system assessment. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate highly proficient project management skills and excellent process improvement skills. A valid driver's license is required. A master's degree and five years of increasingly progressive executive level experience in a government organization is desired.
