Job Summary

As a Structural Steel Fabrication Project Manager at Rio Grande Co, you'll be responsible for overseeing the fabrication, detailing, estimation, and successful execution of Structural Steel-related aspects within commercial/residential construction projects. Your role will involve managing both internal and third-party estimating/detailing services and holding the outside sales account managers accountable by communicating issues as they arise to the Division Manager.

In addition, you will:

  • Develop comprehensive project plans for steel fabrication and detailing, considering timelines, resources, and profitability constraints. Coordinate with the production team, purchasing department, and facility managers to ensure timely steel detailing aligned with project specifications.


  • Coordinate with the fabrication process, ensuring the timely production and delivery of materials while maintaining quality standards. Collaborate with fabrication teams to optimize production efficiency and minimize waste.


  • Manage detailed estimations for structural steel requirements based on project designs and specifications. Ensure a continuous high standard in estimations and detailing. Monitor and manage project budgets related to fabrication, ensuring cost-effectiveness without compromising quality.


  • Coordinate with external structural steel detailing service providers to ensure accurate and timely completion of detailing work. Review and approve steel detailing plans to ensure alignment with project requirements.


  • Work closely with the outside sales account manager, so to maintain client relationships and project success. Provide necessary support and guidance to the sales team to ensure client needs are met and projects are executed effectively.


  • Implement quality control operational measures and partner with Steel Fabrication Manager to ensure a high standard in fabrication order accuracy as well as accurate and complete deliveries to jobsites. Identify potential risks and develop proactive strategies to mitigate project delays or cost overruns.


  • Serve as the primary liaison between internal teams, external vendors, clients, and management team. Foster effective communication and collaboration to ensure smooth project progression and customer satisfaction.


  • Responsible for working with the Accounting Team to issue change orders and track lump sum contracts.

Job Requirements

  • Degree in civil engineering, construction management or architecture or related field experience is preferred.
  • Five to seven years of experience in structural steel detailing, estimating or a similar role within the construction industry.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD systems
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications.
  • Familiarity with steel fabrication and cutting equipment, tools, and machinery.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in the construction industry.
  • Strong organizational and critical thinking skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • All other duties assigned.


Working Conditions

Constant = 75 - 100% of the time; Frequent = 50 - 75% of the time; Occasional = 25 - 50% of the time; Rare = less than 25% of the time

Work Environment:

  • Constant work performed in a climate-controlled environment.


Physical Demands:
  • Frequent work performed in a sedentary position.
  • Occasional work performed while standing.
  • Must be able to lift, bend, stop, and kneel.
