Objective of the Job:
As the primary point of contact for OEM customers for tooling and material formability, the Manager of Advanced Product Applications will be responsible for pre-production review of stamping simulations and die design, with both internal and external customers, to evaluate material suitability with given formability requirements. This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining a tooling engineering program to certify BRS employees in correct circle grid analysis procedures. The Manager of Advanced Product Applications will also strategically coordinate these activities with the relevant internal BRS stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Understanding Health, Safety, Environmental, ResponsibleSteel and Quality programs while developing or executing strategies to address issues and how they can be integrated into the business plan.
2) Knowledge of ResponsibleSteel requirements for reduction of environmental impacts and energy reduction, concerns for local communities and stakeholders, and/or preservation of diversity.
3) Manage, develop, and prioritize the OEM/Tier1 team to support product and applications developments to initiate and complete tooling and simulation projects and to promote BRS advanced automotive products in current and future production vehicles.
4) Work closely with the customer's materials engineering, advanced stamping quality engineering, and assembly plant organizations to support the use of Big River Steel products in automotive applications.
5) Travel to customer location for training on tooling and stamping simulation engineering, work closely with customer engineering organizations to troubleshoot material, product and process related issues during new vehicle launch and on-going current production parts, assemblies, and vehicles.
6) Work across BRS, USS, and other partners to develop and refine product designs.
7) Stay abreast of customer specific issues, trends, and developments that are relevant for product development or evaluating product design opportunities.
8) Serve as a representative for BRS in commercial and technical customer discussions, as required.
9) Ability to travel domestic and internationally 50% or more of the time.
Qualifications:
1) Bachelor's degree in mechanical or material science engineering or related engineering field with at least eight years or master's degree with at least six years of proven experience in automotive Body in White (BIW).
2) Must be fluent with CAD and stamping simulation systems with die construction/design/dimensional verification and tool layouts and the ability to work with multiple file formats.
3) Must have a good understanding of sheet metal forming principals, HSS and AHSS materials commonly used in today's applications and be able to recommend material alternatives based on application and product geometry.
4) Ability to clearly communicate with die shops providing them with additional information to aid in the construction of the die, and troubleshoot issues such as edge cracking, thinning, splitting and able to complete tooling reports for OEMs and provide modeling concepts that correlate with actual die construction.
5) Must be able to lead design reviews, making recommendations, as needed, to the BRS Product Development team. Must be able to create and present technical reports.
6) Proven experience of sheet metal forming principles, materials commonly used in today's applications and recommend material alternatives based on application and product geometry.
7) Remain current with latest die processes and tooling trends to maintain industry leading skills.
8) Exceptional communication, collaboration, and leadership skills are required, with the ability to work with various levels of customer and corporate management to ensure implementation.
9) Ability to use and navigate common business software packages.
10) Travel: Minimum travel of 40 -50% expected.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
This is a remote position that requires a flexible schedule. Hours could include overtime, nights and weekends as well as travel with little or no advance notice. This position requires the ability to work in hot/cold manufacturing environments.
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position does not supervise others.
