The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning is seeking a Systems Programmer to designs, implement, and maintain Esri GIS application projects including development and administration of associated database solutions. Administers enterprise Windows systems hosted on SaaS VMs. This position will Integrate various PaaS platforms such as AWS and ArcGIS Online.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field AND four years of systems and/or applications programming experience; OR, Associate's degree in Computer Science or related field AND five years of systems and/or applications programming experience; OR, Six years of systems and/or applications programming experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Department Statement

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning(SGSUP) is a major participant in the instructional and research activities of Arizona State University. We staff team of 19 supports 37 tenure/tenure-track faculty including three members of the National Academy of Sciences, over 1000 undergraduate majors (split between campus and online) and 200+ graduate students studying in one of five graduate degree programs (MA and PhD programs in Geography, a PhD in Urban Planning, a Masters in Urban and Environmental Planning and a Master of Advanced Studies in Geographical Information Systems(with more on the way) as well as graduate certificate programs in GIS and transportation.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in Windows system administration
  • Ability to manage enterprise SQL Server and Postgres, with a focus on geodatabases
  • SQL experience including the ability to construct complex SQL queries, joins, and triggers
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS Enterprise administration
  • Experience in programming languages: C# in ASP.NET, JavaScript, Python
  • Knowledge of JavaScript libraries and frameworks (e.g. React, Next.js)
  • Experience in ETL utilizing SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
  • Experience in Esri frameworks including Esri JS API, WAB Developer Edition, ArcPy
  • Experience in Version control with Git
  • Experience in in using basic AWS system architecture including EC2, RDS, and Lambda
  • Evidence of effective communication skills

Essential Duties

  • Develop and maintain small, medium, and large web and mapping applications for visualizing and distributing geospatial data using Esri software technologies along with other technologies such as Next.js, React, HTML/CSS, Bootstrap, Git, SQL Server, and ASP.NET.
  • Work alongside other developers and GIS analysts, implementing front-end and back-end solutions.
  • Participate in all aspects of the application development life cycle, including client-side programming using HTML/CSS, JavaScript (React) and integration of data from backend services into client side.
  • Develop GIS web services, including via RESTful APIs.
  • Develop well-structured, commented, and documented code that can be reused in future applications.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with stakeholders.
  • Install, maintain, and support GIS software and ArcGIS Enterprise systems, including license administration.
  • Automate data processing and develop ETL pipelines to deliver data products and visualizations utilizing ArcPy, SSIS, and other related technologies.
  • Manage enterprise SQL Server and Postgres databases with an emphasis on geodatabases.
  • Administer enterprise Windows systems hosted on SaaS VMs. Integrates various PaaS platforms such as AWS and ArcGIS Online.
  • Monitor system backup procedures and direct recovery operations in the event of destruction of all or part of the operating system or other GIS system components.
  • Monitor the testing and evaluation of new versions of operating systems, GIS related software, and associated code technologies.
