Job Summary
The Assistant Controller plays a critical role in supporting various members of the Finance/Accounting Management Team. The right individual for this role is a motivated leader with a strong accounting background that is excited to lend their creativity and strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills to further enhance the bank's regulatory reporting process. This role is primarily responsible for the supervision, preparation and review of bank regulatory reports filed with various regulatory agencies, as well as implementing regulatory accounting policies to be followed by the bank, performing research and analysis as necessary. This individual would also contribute to various accounting related functions such as the preparation, presentation and interpretation of financial reports; accounting analysis; account reconciliations; financial data analysis; and assist with financial audits. Will direct certain departmental activities; provide leadership, training and supervision; provide a high level of customer relations and service; and ensure compliance with Bank policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following and will be executed under the direction of the Controller. Other duties may be assigned:
- Obtains and maintains a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure of the Bank, holding company and other subsidiaries and supports preparation of month-end, quarter-end and year-end financial statements.
- Ensures that record systems and procedures are maintained in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.
- Oversees supervision, preparation and reviews the periodic reports for the FDIC, FRB, and other agencies in accordance with regulatory reporting instructions, including quarterly Call, FRY9C, FRYLP, FRY10.
- Conducts research into new accounting pronouncements and regulatory updates to evaluate new opportunities and changes in bank practices to determine the appropriate application.
- Coordinates and performs periodic testing and validation of reporting procedures and processes to ensure compliance with internal controls and policies. Reviews or prepares schedules requested by regulatory (e.g. FDIC, FRB), internal, and external auditors. Prepares special reports and analyses as requested by Executive Management.
- Conducts analysis of source system data with a constant focus on improvement of data quality and reconciliation. Maintains and updates bank policies related to regulatory reporting. Keeps abreast of changes in accounting and regulatory principles, regulations, and laws.
- Responsible for leading and directing employees assisting with the regulatory reporting process.
- Assists in managing preparation and support of internal and external audits. Serves as a point of contact for external auditors and bank examiners.
- Participates in proper filing of SEC reports.
- Conducts research into new accounting pronouncements, SEC rules, and regulatory updates to evaluate new opportunities and changes in bank practices to determine the appropriate application.
- Leads system integration projects related to accounting, including workflow automation and new vendor implementation.
- Serves as a liaison to functional leadership across the organization, assisting them with accounting related service issues.
- Monitors system controls for ensuring data integrity and confidentiality at all times.
- Interprets financial transactions and events for users who must make economic or business decisions.
- Develops tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the Controller, CFO, and executive leadership team and makes actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations based on current financial information.
- Ensures legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions. Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements.
- Maintains appropriate internal controls and financial safeguards.
- Manages work allocation, training, problem resolution and the support of an effective team dynamic.
- Recommends and/or establishes and implements short and long-range departmental goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures.
- Adhere to bank policies and procedures designed to comply with Federal regulations, including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act, USA Patriot Act and OFAC regulations.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree from a four year college or university in accounting, finance or business administration, or an approved equivalent. CPA status is strongly preferred.
- Banking/financial institution and regulatory reporting experience is highly preferred.
- Comprehensive understanding of GAAP, knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control principles.
- Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations and laws, including SEC and bank regulations, as they apply to financial reporting.
- Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections.
- Advanced skills with spreadsheets (pivot tables, vlookups, formula writing), databases, and PC proficient.
- Ability to work on multiple, concurrent projects, as part of a team or independently, and research, understand, and evaluate Bank operations, rules and regulations
- Possess the ability to organize, prioritize, and complete work assignments in a timely manner.
- Possess the initiative and willingness to take ownership and drive improvement independently.
- Demonstrate a high level of personal integrity and reflect an appropriate level of judgment, maturity, and confidentiality.
- Successfully interact with all levels of Bank personnel in a positive, constructive manner.
Experience
- Minimum 7 years' experience in roles of increasing responsibility in accounting and financial reporting. Experience with publicly traded corporations, financial institutions, accounting firms and regulatory filings preferred. Experience in leading or supervising a project team is preferred
