THE OPPORTUNITY

Western Forest Products has a new opportunity for a Vice President, Finance based at our Corporate Office in Vancouver, B.C.

What You'll Do: The Vice President, Finance is a key executive leader responsible for the comprehensive management of the company's financial functions, including internal and external reporting, financial accounting, payroll, internal controls, treasury, risk management, pension administration and tax. This role is critical in driving financial performance and excellence, ensuring the company's fiscal health, and aligning financial operations with the overall business strategy. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Vice President, Finance works closely with the executive leadership team, providing insights and recommendations to support long-term growth and profitability.

Work Environment: This role is to be performed in person at our office in Vancouver, B.C with regular travel to various operations on Vancouver Island and in Washington State.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Strategy and Planning
  • Develop and implement the company's financial strategy and structure, ensuring alignment with business goals;
  • Oversee the annual, quarterly and monthly budgeting process, including forecasting, financial modeling, and strategic planning;
  • Present financial analysis, insights, and recommendations to support business decisions and initiatives;
  • Provide financial leadership and lead integration efforts related to acquisitions and divestitures;
  • Partners with the business to increase financial transparency in reporting business performance;
  • Monitor industry trends and economic conditions to anticipate financial challenges and opportunities.

Leadership and Team Management
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team, fostering a culture of high performance, continuous improvement and focus on execution;
  • Collaborate with other department leaders to ensure financial alignment and support for various business functions;
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and CFO and other members of the executive leadership team;
  • Builds a culture of accountability to support and deliver on the company's strategic priorities, ensuring integration with employee performance development plans.

Financial Management
  • Oversee all financial operations, including accounting, treasury and risk management, internal controls, tax, and financial reporting;
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, accounting standards, and company policies;
  • Manage cash flow, capital structure, and funding strategies to maintain the financial stability of the company;
  • Supervise the preparation and presentation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

Financial Reporting and Communication
  • Lead the presentation of financial results to executive management and Board Audit Committee;
  • Prepare financial materials for the Board and other stakeholders, ensuring effective access to information for appropriate staff and business partners;
  • Work with executive management to support the company's external financial communication strategy.

External Reporting and Compliance
  • Oversee the preparation and filing of public quarterly reports and key annual filings, including the Annual Report, Annual Information Form and Sustainability Report;
  • Ensure compliance with all financial and regulatory requirements;
  • Oversee the completion and filing of the company's staff pension plan statements and serve as a member of the Pension Advisory Committee.

Internal Controls and Risk Management
  • Ensure robust internal controls and risk management practices across the company;
  • Manage the relationship with auditors and work closely with the Board Audit Committee to ensure effective oversight of audits;
  • Provide oversight of the finance, tax and risk portions of the company's contract management process.

Treasury and Tax Management
  • Direct management of treasury strategies, operations, and policies;
  • Oversee treasury operations, including receipts, disbursements, cash forecasting, borrowing, foreign exchange, and management of treasury banking relationships;
  • Ensure income and other tax compliance and timely completion of all corporate tax returns;
  • Oversee the implementation of tax planning and corporate structuring.

Board and Committee Responsibilities
  • Prepare financial materials and deliver recommendations to the Board and Board committees regarding financials, audit, tax and financial risk matters;
  • Provide technical financial advice and knowledge to others within the company.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
  • 15+ years of progressive financial management experience including previous experience in a senior leadership role; preferably in a similar industry and with a public company;
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting or business management or equivalent degree;
  • CPA or equivalent accounting designation required; and
  • Proven leadership with a demonstrated history of successful execution of advancing strategic priorities and driving continuous improvement within a company.

Skills, Knowledge, and Required Competencies
  • Excellent leadership, strategic thinking and team management skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team, including mentoring, coaching and developing people;
  • Strong financial acumen and analytical skills;
  • Strong knowledge of finance, accounting and tax, including accounting standards and policies;
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, which are clear, concise and targeted to the audience;
  • Proficient in financial modeling, forecasting, and reporting;
  • Demonstrated success in supporting, managing and implementing financial and IT systems and processes;
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects;
  • Self-reliant, good problem solver and results focused;
  • In-depth knowledge of financial regulations and compliance;
  • Experience in integrating and financial reporting matters of limited partnerships and joint ventures would be an asset;
  • Ability to drive change, bring creative solutions and not be afraid to challenge the status quo;
  • Ability to design and manage processes, work flows and systems effectively; and
  • Ability to manage people successfully through clear guidance and goals, celebrating successes and providing feedback.
