Compensation

Salary commensurate with experience; expected hiring range $86,000 - $100,000/year

The Office of the Kansas Attorney General's (OAG's) Civil Division operates as a general-service law firm for the State of Kansas and its many constituent agencies. We provide legal advice as general counsel to agencies across State government, we represent State agencies, institutions of higher education, and employees sued in state and federal court for personal injuries, property damage, employment discrimination, and more.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

The (OAG) is accepting applications to fill an Assistant Attorney General (AAG) position in our Civil Division, Legal Oversight and Government Counsel (LOGiC) section to be assigned to perform complex legal work for the Kansas Lottery .
  • Provide legal services and advice to the Executive Director of the Kansas Lottery and to Kansas Lottery staff on all legal matters that arise in the course of the lottery's operation, i ncluding investigations and enforcement of the Kansas Lottery Act. Draft proposed rules and regulations, requests for proposals and contracts.
  • Assist in legal matters that may occur as a result of the operation of the lottery including contract matters, payment of claims, collections, or other situations that may occur
  • Assist the Lottery's Sales and Marketing Departments on legal issues concerning promotions, advertising, game development and sales operations, as needed
  • Assist on matters involving Lottery personnel and in administering the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it applies to the Kansas Lottery and to lottery retailers
  • Provide legal services concerning contractual matters, to include reviewing language of contracts, leases and other documents that may affect the Kansas Lottery operations
  • Assist the Kansas Lottery's Security Division by advising on investigative matters, including court proceedings that may arise as a result of an investigation

Travel: Infrequent to occasional travel both within and outside the state of Kansas for meetings, depositions, hearings, trials, training, and other investigation- and litigation-related duties will be required.

Qualifications

Licensing & Certification
  • Membership in good standing with the Bar of the Supreme Court of Kansas or eligible for admission on waiver
  • A valid driver's license
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least two (2) years post-J.D. experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience advising executive decision-makers on legal topics
Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements
  • As a condition of employment, candidate(s) are subject to a pre-employment screening process to include a fingerprint and name-based criminal history records check and reference/background check of past and present employers. The pre-employment screening process will be waived for current OAG personnel who have previously completed the screening requirements.
