ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a Director, Engineering to join our Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) team. Things are moving and changing quickly at Hut 8 and we need a team player that marries chaos and structure with ease.

The Director, Engineering will report to the Vice President, Corporate Strategy. In this role, you will function as Hut 8's point of contact for new builds and operations engineering and will liaise between the Corporate Development team, the Operations Team, and the EPC Team. You will work closely with existing EPC Project Managers to ensure the customers' needs are carried out to high levels of expectation.

The candidate will be involved in the development of high power data center designs, specifically focused on sophisticated electrical infrastructure from site assessments to final turnover. The candidate will collaborate with the EPC team to prepare all types of documents including site audits, statement of work (SOW), concept design reviews, site layouts, drawing markup, budget, schedule, technical RFI's, factory test and acceptance documents.

This role has a dual focus in that you will be supporting the operations team specifically during significant events. However you will also be leaned upon as an industry expert to provide guidance on operational metrics, procedures, and code interpretation.

Development
  • Lead the design and engineering of new facilities, managing all aspects from inception to completion, specifically in the development of sophisticated electrical infrastructure from site assessments to final turnover
  • Serve as the primary Point of Contact (POC) for the Corporate Development team in new site initial due-diligence and engineering requirements
  • Collaborate closely with existing EPC Project Managers to ensure the customers' needs are carried out to high levels of expectation
  • Coordinate with the EPC team, and supporting specialty consultants, to support customer's design needs, pricing, customer approvals, & implementation of specific deployment scopes
  • Collaborate with EPC team to provide and prepare all types of documents including facility review checklists, facility audits, statement of work (SOW), concept design reviews, drawing markup, budget, schedule, technical RFIs, factory test and acceptance documents
  • Collaborate with energy and land origination teams in ensuring that all new potential developments meet critical thresholds and feasibility requirements
  • Create and Review project design drawings during development from concept to IFC
  • Develop and maintain a robust set of technical design standards with regard to Bitcoin mining facilities, AI, and traditional data centers
  • Understand and evaluate data center designs based on level of redundancy and SPOFs in the design, from initial concept to final approval and transfer to the development departments
  • Lead power system issues during concept design, detailed design, procurement, biding, manufacturing, delivery, and installation on site
  • Update and maintain the internal design specifications, drawings and standards to the latest configurations with all lessons learned included for all equipment

Operations
  • Engineering point of escalation for Electrical system issues that occur in our data centers
  • Troubleshoot and engineer enhancements and corrective actions for designs and implementation processes/methods
  • Conduct detailed analyses and audits of Electrical system utilization
  • Evaluate systems to perform effective and efficient load management and capacity planning
  • Monitor, trend, and develop engineering metrics and statistical data for strategic planning
  • Cross discipline teamwork and general understanding of interrelated issues as necessary
  • Review new and retrofit Electrical designs, commissioning plans, and critical operational procedures
  • Review Electrical "as-built" technical documentation and verify accuracy
  • Investigate actual site conditions and update records
  • Evaluate facility processes and industry best practices to drive efficiencies and effectiveness
  • Routinely report and present to peers, partners and leadership
  • And other duties as assigned

ABOUT YOU
  • Experience managing multiple large, multi-faceted projects
  • Experience to research, diagnose, troubleshoot and identify solutions to resolve system issues within discipline.
  • Experience working independently and as a member of a cross functional team
  • 5+ years professional experience in data center engineering, mission critical design, construction, operations, maintenance or related industry.
  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience clearly communicating technical issues.
  • Experience with computer based mathematical analysis and data analysis.
  • Experience driving complex projects under pressure.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, building codes and safety standards applicable to the region where the position will be based
  • Knowledge of short circuit coordination and arc flash studies
  • Develop and generate specifications, RFPs, ROMs and SOWs for projects

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Organizational skills and experience beyond the field technician level in activities such as project management, project engineering, and operations management.
  • Electrical Professional Engineer (PE) registration or local equivalent.
  • Cross-discipline knowledge of multiple critical facility systems.
  • Experience associated with high voltage substations, mission critical power distribution and generator power systems
  • Experience in load management at the operations level within a critical facility
  • Experience in the conduct and interpretation of short circuit coordination studies
