Job Summary
Milwaukee Recreation is seeking a highly motivated and hardworking individual to assist with the management of a comprehensive youth sports program throughout the city of Milwaukee. Primary responsibilities include the development and oversight of instructional sports activities and leagues; guiding and supervising a team of full-time staff; preparing the annual program budget; drafting and submitting program specific contracts; purchasing of supplies and equipment; collaboration with school officials, community partners, coaches, and parents in the delivery of sports programming; reviewing and updating program policies and procedures; and the planning and implementation of special events.
Milwaukee Recreation manages a network of more than 900 school-based elementary and middle school sports teams on an annual basis across 10 sports including basketball, cheerleading, cross country, flag football, soccer (indoor and outdoor), softball, t-ball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball. Qualifications
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree required from an accredited college or university in recreation management, athletic administration, sports management, education, or related field. Master's Degree and/or Certified Athletic Administrator preferred.
Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent professional work experience supervising employees engaged in the planning and implementation of sports and athletics programs, managing athletic leagues/tournaments and management of sports facilities.
- Experience delivering services in an urban environment preferred.
- Supervision of full and/or part-time staff.
Certification Requirements:
- Certified Youth Sports Administrator (CYSA) and/or Certified Athletic Administrator preferred.
- Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) preferred.
- First Aid/AED or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
Responsibilities
- Oversees the implementation of youth sports school-based leagues, camps, and activities.
- Provides guidance and supervision to full-time staff to ensure professional growth, and fulfillment of job duties and responsibilities.
- Assures that assigned areas of responsibility are performed within budget, prepares annual budget requests, and ensures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds.
- Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates part-time program instructors, officials, sports coordinators, and support staff.
- Completes administrative functions including payroll, part-time staff attendance, part-time staff evaluations, and seasonal reports.
- Conducts regular site visits (evenings and weekends) to determine program effectiveness and to provide evaluation feedback and support to full-time and part-time staff.
- Oversees youth sports special events (e.g., MPS Run Back to School, Cheer Showcase, Cheer Camp, March of Champions, etc.).
- Assists schools with efforts to initiate, expand, and manage school-based youth sports activities to ensure equitable access for all students.
- Devises methods to assist schools regarding player, coach, and sports coordinator recruitment, training, and retention.
- Implements school/student participation registration system (rSchoolToday) for all elementary and middle school sports programs.
- Creates and distributes seasonal evaluation surveys to participants, families, and schools to measure the quality of current youth sports offerings.
- Develops a plan to increase family engagement and excitement around district sponsored youth sports programs and events.
- Oversees seasonal Sports Coordinator and Coaches meetings/trainings to provide updated information, and to identify gaps in service delivery.
- Works to incorporate new and innovative activities into programming based on industry trends and community needs to keep participation at optimal levels.
- Works with Milwaukee Recreation marketing team to increase the overall profile of district sponsored youth sports programs/events through marketing, branding, and traditional and/or social media platforms.
- Develops sport specific Athletic Advisory committees, to identify needs associated with student-athlete recruitment, skill development, MPS feeder systems, and coaches' trainings.
- Upholds and enforces league rules to maintain a safe environment.
- Works in collaboration with the Commissioner of Interscholastic Athletics and Academics to conduct disciplinary reviews and meetings involving participating teams.
- Reviews and updates program policies and procedures (Handbook and Website) annually, while ensuring compliance across programs.
- Purchases program equipment and supplies, while also monitoring current inventory.
- Identifies external funding opportunities to meet program needs.
- Oversees facility scheduling for program activities.
- Contributes to enhancing the synergy between elementary, middle school, and high school sports.
- Establishes partnerships with other MPS departments, schools, governmental units, vendors, and community-based organizations and agencies to develop quality youth sports programs throughout the district.
- ssists with Recreation Department activities as needed.
- Serves on committees as required and/or assigned.
- Actively supports the MPS Five Priorities for Success.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
