What You Will Do
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and skills using 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce models, drawings, layouts and engineering concepts. They will also generate complete design packages for complex components, assemblies, tooling, equipment and/or systems. Independently defines modeling structure for large, complex design projects and resolves design package issues by facilitating design reviews, collaborating with other engineers, drafters/designers, and stakeholders on hardware design, fabrication, assembly and testing. Knowledge of engineering concepts and advanced skills in product data management and/or configuration management of part and assembly definition.
Working knowledge of industry standards such as ASME Y series design/drafting standards including Y14.5M Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) as related to design field. Ability to perform complex calculations in support of unique technical problems for fit, form and function. Works independently or as part of a team. May mentor lower-level designers in American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Y14.5 or Laboratory drafting manual and may perform drawing checks.
Detonator Production (DP) Division is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce WR (War Reserve) detonators for the Nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate. DP is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in an integrated format. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precision, safe and reliable WR products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders such as NNSA (National Nuclear Security Administration), Design Agencies (LANL, Sandia, and Livermore), and LANL program management orgs to deliver on challenging National security objectives. DP upholds vigorous teamwork, personal integrity, respectful workplace, and continuous improvement in operations, technical excellence, safety and security.
Primary work scope includes, but is not limited to:
Ensuring safety and security compliance, maintaining required training, adhering to laboratory policies, programs, procedures and practices.
Responsibility for the design, fabrication, inspection, and testing of War Reserve and experimental detonator components and subcomponents.
Collaboration with other engineers, drafters/designers, quality engineers, and production technicians.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Technical - Proven experience applying engineering principles, methods, and tools to complex problems. Can effectively apply engineering first principles to design components, tooling, fixtures, and gauges that meet design requirements and criteria. Can apply industry standards to design packages to meet intended requirements.
Leadership - Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership to designers and drafters.
Communication - Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with all levels of the department.
Interpretation of Drawings - Proficiency in interpreting and translating complex design agency specifications and engineering drawings.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Weapons - Knowledge of the United States nuclear weapons programs, designs, and engineering.
Specific Skills - Ability to understand and modify Gerber files and G-Code. Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5, Dimensioning and Tolerances. Working proficiency with direct or parametric engineering modeling software (e.g., CREO, SolidWorks, ANSYS, and AutoCAD) and associated Product Data Management system(s). General understanding of various metal joining techniques including soldering and welding. Machine shop equipment like a mill, lathe, drill press, welder and inspection equipment.
Clearance - Active, ability to reinstate, or ability to obtain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance.
Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens.
