Description:

Tesla is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to help design, innovate, and sustain our vision of a vertically integrated recycling operations and creation of closed-loop battery supply chains. This role will develop world-class equipment and processes, working with cross-functional teams throughout the entire product launch lifecycle from design to full production ramp. This role requires a highly driven Engineer to work closely with Design Engineering, Quality, Production, Maintenance, and external vendors to take recycling designs from initial concept through prototype development and into high-volume production.
The engineering designs include, but not limited to: wastewater treatment, proprietary high-kinetic energy battery module disassembly systems, battery conveyance and handling equipment, bulk material flow systems, high-flow exhaust and scrubber systems and separation equipment (e.g. magnetic separation systems, vibratory systems, etc.).

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate closely with Design Engineering to develop recycled products that lend themselves to streamlined and robust recycling methods with industry-best safety, quality, rate and cost
  • Support Tesla's factory and facility teams to develop highly-efficient and optimized factory-level layouts
  • Take direct responsibility for exceeding market-leading product quality and lead all activities towards this objective including the development of process improvement strategies, quality control plans and material improvement plans
  • Lead the development of innovative and robust recycling methods to achieve the material recovery strategy, working closely with Tesla's commercial partners to qualify and deliver the final product
  • Drive the continued improvement of early project planning documents such as project timelines, Requests for Quotations, FMEA's and Safety Risk Assessments
  • Lead the development and introduction of processes and equipment associated with early prototype materials and highlighting key process and equipment improvement opportunities throughout the prototype qualifications themselves
  • Work closely with Tesla's partner vendors to develop world-class production lines with unprecedented simplicity, density, speed, and automation
  • Lead the installation, commissioning, and ramp of high-volume recycling production lines, ensuring close collaboration with Tesla's partner vendors to deliver the line in the shortest possible time and lowest possible cost
  • Initiate and drive strategies to rapidly ramp the quality and rate of newly launched production lines to full capacity with a focus on maintaining the highest of safety standards throughout the ramp duration
  • Build on the success of existing line layouts, processes, and tooling to further improve material flow, waste reduction, safety, and ergonomics by utilizing lean manufacturing best practices and structured problem-solving methodologies


Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Chemical, or Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of related experience developing and launching complex assembly processes
  • A 'can-do' attitude with open mindedness and a strong desire to think 'outside the box'
  • A proven track record of taking initiative, managing competing demands, collaborating closely with others, and remaining positive in high-pressure environments involving hazardous production material (HPM)
  • A demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and make data-based decisions, owning assignments and taking full accountability for their successful and timely delivery
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and assignments, coping with rapidly changing inputs, constraints, and priorities
  • Strong familiarity with structured problem-solving methodologies such as DMAIC, 5 Whys, Fishbone, and 8D
  • Strong understanding of BOMs, OEE, manufacturability, DFM, process design, process validation, assembly methods, design reviews and cost reduction methodologies
  • Experience with AUTOCAD, CATIA, SOLIDWORKS, and other similar software/tools
