Position Summary

This position functions as the sole accountant for the State Life Insurance Fund. The position is responsible for the development and maintenance of the Fund's automated accounting system; maintenance of accounts within the automated financial system; reconciliation of the independent accounting system on a periodic basis with the state accounting system; interpretation of existing federal, state, statutory and GAAP rules and regulations; and any changes for life companies and implementation of the changes needed in accounting policies and procedures to maintain compliance.

Maintains the bond portfolio and produces Schedule D reports for the annual financial statement and GAAP fiscal statement for the Fund. This position maintains a thorough understanding of Fund procedures, state investment management, policy administration system, and electronic document system. Reports to the Insurance Program Manager of the Fund and functions under general supervision.

Salary Information

Starting salary for the Accountant Journey will be between $34.00 - $44.33 per hour and is eligible for the CPA add-on, plus great benefits. This classification is assigned to pay schedule/range 07-03. A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Job Details

Due to the nature of the position, OCI will conduct background checks on applicants prior to selection. OCI does not sponsor visas and is not an eligible OPT employer for those with F1 visas. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States, and to complete the required employment eligibility form upon hire.

This position has potential for a combination of telecommuting and in-person work after an initial training period has been completed. Further details can be discussed during the interview.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have education, training, or experience related to all of the following:
  • Minimum qualification standard: A bachelor's degree or higher in accounting or auditing from an accredited institution or commensurate professional experience in accounting and/or auditing.
  • Utilizing spreadsheets and databases (such as Microsoft Office Excel or similar)
  • General accounting duties (e.g. financial statement preparation, reconciliations, general ledger journal vouchers, auditing, or similar)
  • Using financial systems and/or finance-related platforms.
  • Reading, interpreting, and/or applying policy and procedures, related to financial or accounting processes.
Well qualified applicants will have one or more of the following:
  • Master's degree in accounting or a Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
  • Education, training, or experience with insurance regulatory requirements, including those from entities like the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC)
  • Education, training, or experience with a basic understanding of actuarial principles, such as risk assessment and reserve calculations.
