NATURE OF DUTIES:

The nature of the duties are to perform diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures on MCI ASC out-patients consistent with the objectives of the treatment plan designed for the patient and as directed by the attending physician. Under the direct supervision of the physicians, the technologist will assist in performing diagnostic treatment and interventional procedures on patients according to the department protocol to achieve optimum diagnosis. The technologist will also be responsible for performing routine to complex diagnostic and therapeutic technical procedures in the MCI Ambulatory Surgery Center.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Performs daily equipment checks for performance quality and maintains equipment used within the interventional cardiac cath lab.
  • Prepares for operation of equipment pertinent to case and completion of case.
  • Makes sure all data transfer to the recording system is transported and stored properly.
  • Enters patients on log for permanent records and billing purposes and assigns medical record numbers to all patient records.
  • Prepares procedure room with appropriate tray, supplies, and support equipment. Supplies are provided or retrieved expediently with accuracy and reasonably anticipated prior to start of procedure.
  • Assist with patient positioning, proper equipment positioning, and selection of radiation exposure parameters and image the patient.
  • Circulates within the procedure room, remains in room, engaged with procedure, and assists with any requests.
  • Communicates effectively with all members of the health care team.
  • The MCI/CIS ASCCath Lab Technologist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to the adult and geriatric patient. Has ability to recognize waveforms and perform hemodynamic measurements on the hemodynamic system currently in use. Able to monitor patients' blood pressure and heart rate/rhythm during procedure and notify physician if something appears abnormal.
  • Competent to perform in scrub tech role, setting up and maintaining sterility throughout the entire procedure, assist the physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral vascular, interventional treatments, assisting in angioplasties and other such treatments deemed necessary by the physician.
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding and working knowledge of normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology of the peripheral vascular system, radiation safety, interventional supplies and equipment operation. Uses professional judgment and critical thinking when performing procedures.
  • Maintains a high degree of accuracy and an awareness of all radiation and patient safety issues involved with any invasive procedure. Reports fluoro times to physicians at standard intervals. Guides non-RT personnel in safe radiation practices.
  • Maintains expertise on assigned inventory and acts as a resource to the other staff and physicians. Becomes a "Train the Trainer" for assigned equipment.
  • Completes appropriate competency checklist for area of practice. Completes continuing education hours as directed and to maintain ARRT credentials and state licensing. Supervises or serves as a preceptor to orientees.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of charting system. When not in rad/scrub tech role participates in charting specifics of the procedure.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to pull arterial/venous sheaths and holds manual pressure to obtain hemostasis with documented competencies.
  • Has technical knowledge and skill on any devices, machinery, and equipment specific to the Cath Lab, i.e. Laser, Orbital Atherectomy, Thrombectomy, FFR/IVUS, and etc.
  • Has knowledge and skill with documented competencies for deployment of vascular closure devices
  • Transports patients within department as needed. Follows infection control and safety guidelines.
  • Ability to work as a team member in a stressful environment, to follow directions/instructions of his/her supervisor. Consistent attendance is required. Complies with all MCI/CIS ASCpolicies, procedures, practices, and Standards of Behavior.
  • Ability to assume additional responsibilities, late shifts, etc., at supervisor's assignment and discretion.
  • Basic understanding of computer technology


  • STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE:

    1. Keeps work area neat and organized. Reports safety issues to team leader immediately.

    2. Works efficiently and manages time wisely. Assist other employees when all duties are complete.

    3. Communicates any problems, difficulties or concerns regarding job duties to the team leader.

    4. Performs all duties without significant error occurring with any regularity.

    5. Meets all deadlines and timeframes for completion of assignments.

    6. Represents MCI/CIS ASC in a professional manner at all times. Demonstrates acceptable ability to interact with physicians, staff ("internal customers") and "external customers" (patients, family members, insurance companies, home health etc.) on a professional level at all times.

    7. Exhibits good communication skills with physicians, patients, team leaders, and co-workers at all times.

    8. Exhibits whenever possible a harmonious relationship with other MCI/CIS ASC employees in order to accomplish the duties and responsibilities of the position. While perfect harmonious relationships with all employees is sometimes not achievable, not more than an occasional complaint should be received by the team leader about the incumbent of this position.

    9. The employee shall work and relate cooperatively with all other employees (internal customers) to assure optimum care for the patients of MCI/CIS ASC and to achieve standards of care set forth by the MCI/CIS ASC medical staff.

    10. Adheres to the MCI/CIS ASC Compliance Plan as it pertains to the above specific job duties. Uses best efforts to maintain compliance by following the MCI/CIS ASC Compliance Plan, attending MCI/CIS ASC compliance education, following medical documentation guidelines, and communicating concerns regarding compliance issues.

    11. Performs accurate and complete documentation in the patient's medical record, when applicable.

    12. Work with the electronic medical record (EMR) staff to maintain quality and work towards future EMR development.

    13. Maintains patient confidentiality according to the HIPAA standards of privacy and security.

    QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:

  • RCIS preferred
  • ARRT required
  • Licensed by the IL State Board of Medical Examiners in Radiologic Technology
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required.
  • 2 years Cath lab experience required
