This position will be filled at the DR-2 or DR-3 (GS-12-13 or GS-14 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. DR-01 (GS-11 equivalent) candidates with one year of specialized experience will be considered. This position may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length Renewable Technical Term Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later extend or convert to a permanent appointment.

The lead will actively influence the Division's technical strategy to align to those needs.

- Needs include identifying and implementing cheaper, faster, and better ways to manufacture advanced components, devices, and systems and partner with industry to make these exciting new techniques reality.
- The ablity to identify and execute projects offering the best returns on investment for the Department of Air Force needs for space systems, to include structures, propulsion, and payloads.
- Accelerate transition of advanced technology to full-rate production for our most critical space mission systems through advanced prototypes and other strategic partnerships across government and industry.
Serves within the Manufacturing, Industrial Technologies, and Energy Division of the Air Force Research Lab Materials and Manufacturing Directorate. Duties include, but not limited to:
- Engaging the operational and S&T customer communities to understand and communicate the requirements and capability-based goals of key DAF organizations (MAJCOMS, PEOs, ...) and transition agents (AFLCMC SPOs, AFSC, other AFRL TDs).
- Articulating product successes by sharing results in internal and external presentations, through activity reports and organizational success stories, etc.
- Consulting the Division leadership to map the Space product area demand signals to the manufacturing technology mission and scope of the Division.
- Informing the Program Leads and project managers within the Product Team by providing strategic context of the product area; by providing best practices for program/project management, assistance with administrative actions, networking, and funding opportunities; and for promoting a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.
- Working with Program Leads to connect the Program visions and objectives to defined over-arching operational/capability needs/requirements/desires.
- Consulting the Division Technical Director in the identification, collection and assessment of technological trends, requirements, priorities, and opportunities for program development and transition to Division customers.
- Identifies, develops, and executes projects and multi-year roadmaps to mature and advance manufacturing technologies and processes that will reduce the acquisition and supportability costs of space systems.
- Continues to strengthen technical knowledge to assist with identifying and solving the Department's most critical barriers to enable advancements in Department of Air Force systems.
- Creates and fosters government/industry/academic partnerships to help advance manufacturing needs, includes staying up to date on the latest technologies through workshops, conferences, and site visits.

Required Qualifications
- US Citizenship
- Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance (for new hires); Possess and maintain a Secret security clearance (for current employees)
- Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade or equivalent in other pay systems
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced technical degree in engineering, physics, or related field.
- Understanding, familiarity, and/or experience with current state-of-art and challenges with manufacturing one or more of the following for space systems: Structures, propulsion, environmental systems, and/or payloads.
- Experience managing or working on government contracts.
- Experience building and executing technical and/or manufacturing roadmaps. Understanding, familiarity, and experience with the challenges and opportunities in manufacturing for space systems, including unique requirements, such as environmental and reliability.
- Self-starter who thrives in a challenging, but rewarding environment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
