Position Profile
The Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to take on the dynamic role as our Staff Attorney/Principal Legal Analyst. This position provides expert legal guidance and performs legal research, writing and editing on complex legal issues for Washington State courts, committees, and the Administrative Office of the Courts. Specifically, this position staffs the Washington Pattern Jury Instruction Committee, the Court of Appeals Executive Committee and the Court of Appeals Rules Committee. Tasks include preparing committee agendas and minutes, tracking and editing changes to pattern jury instructions, and managing and coordinating publication of the same. The candidate will have regular contact with judicial officers, staff, stakeholders, and vendors. The candidate should be able to manage large projects while being responsive to the committees they support.
Provides services directly to judicial officers in their official capacity or as leaders of court associations or committees under the general direction of the Legal Services and Appellate Court Support Manager (Manager). Provides expert legal research and advice.
This is an expert level job that works independently with minimal guidance and supervision on the most complex legal issues, research and projects. Exercises broad decision-making authority within the area of responsibility and expertise defined and directed by the Manager. Interacts regularly with AOC staff, judicial officers, judicial committees, and Legislature and court system personnel. Reviews and assigns work to Legal Analysts and administrative support staff as directed.

Duties and Responsibilities
Some of the duties you will perform are:
- Provides direct legal and other support services to judges and judicial committees; meets with committees and subcommittees to develop materials; records minutes, prepares draft materials for committee approval, and handles certain administrative matters for the committee when necessary.
- Works with committees to develop bench books, manuals, and pattern jury instructions; records minutes, prepares a detailed outline of the materials for Committee approval, and develops a comprehensive work plan for the development and publication of bench books, manuals, and pattern jury instructions.
- Writes and edits bench book and manual drafts; prepares manuscript for final publication; updates publications; assists in preparation of budget for programs and services as assigned.
- Coordinates distribution and review of materials by judges and other experts; prepares status reports and other information on programs and services as assigned.
- Researches court rules, statutes, and case law relative to assigned tasks. Assists in the development and review of legislation for the judiciary, as requested by the Administrative Office of the Courts and may serve as a member of the legislative team.
- Drafts requests for Attorney General Opinions.
- Makes presentations on legal topics to audiences such as Administrative Office of the Courts staff, judicial officers and court system personnel, and members of the Washington State Bar Association (WSBA).
- Responds to legal information requests from judges, court system personnel, and other constituents.
- Manages special projects as assigned; provides analysis and recommendations of policy alternatives.
- Reviews and assigns work to Senior Legal Analysts and administrative support staff as directed.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications and Credentials
- A Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law

- Membership in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association
- Six (6) years of experience as a practicing attorney or similar legal work

- Knowledge of the Washington State court system, criminal and civil procedures and substantive criminal and civil law.
- Knowledge of legal research techniques including electronic and methods of effective, creative legal writing, techniques of editing and preparation of memoranda, court rules and materials for publication.
- Knowledge of the WA State legislative system; ability to formulate draft legislation.
- Communication skills both verbally and in writing.
- Skill in legal analysis and the subsequent formulation of issues.
- Consults with and keeps appropriate staff informed on specific work assignments.
