This position is accountable for managing and directing the Health, Safety, and Security functions in the organization. Primary areas of responsibility include achieving an accident-free workplace; administer HS critical elements including policies & values, legal requirements, planning, implementation & operation, monitoring & measuring, management review and annual assessment. Incumbent should be knowledgeable in plantwide training, maintaining all ISO certifications, plant rescue, rapid response and all wellness programs. Accordingly, the HS&S Manager is the senior health, safety, professional on site.
The Manager is a member of the senior management team and most work closely with all other department heads, and the plant manager. The Manager will also work/supervisor his/her supervisors ensuring that all departments and personnel reporting to him/her achieve excellence in health, safety, and security.
Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge & Education Recommendations:
Bachelor's degree in an OHS-related field is preferred; advanced degree or professional certification (CIH, CRSP, or CSP) is desirable. Minimum of 5 years OHS-related experience in heavy manufacturing. Must be well organized and able to work well within a team environment.
The incumbent must have the ability to build and sustain good working relationships and work effectively in a team environment; be achievement motivated and have a high energy level; effective planning and organizational skills; and effective communication skills (verbal, written, and listening).

Earn and maintain personal credibility as the plant's primary conscience and expert in H&S matters. Apply Century Aluminum values to influence and challenge all persons at the plant about the Health and safety performance. This includes health, wellness, safety and security functions.
Develop the strategic plan for implementation of directives, which meets or exceeds plant and corporate expectations. Encourage and facilitate change to eliminate obstacles to excellent performance in Health and Safety. Develop the plan for the development, implementation and sustainability of Heath and Safety and security systems.
Understand the relevant H&S regulations, best practice and processes. Ensure the plant understands the requirements and complies at all times.
Coach and communicate Heath and Safety strategies to the OHS team, line management, supervisors, and employees.
Ensure that the plant earns and maintains all ISO certifications
Ensure that the injury-illness record keeping is consistent with corporate and OSHA guidelines. This must include quality, training, and security documentation.
Provide the needed information to the plants leadership union and management to ensure true understating of Century Aluminum and all government rules and regulations.
Understand and interpret health and Safety regulatory requirements and corporate directives. Advise management of actual and potential non-conformances. Build and maintain the Health and safety team's technical expertise.
