The Opportunity: Police Lieutenant

The Port of Virginia - Virginia Port Authority is seeking a Police Lieutenant to oversee major functional area supervision, oversight of law enforcement activities, policy, procedures, budgets, Maritime Transportation Security Act compliance, and other administrative or operational processes.

What You'll Do: Responsibilities
  • Responsible for supervision and accountability of assigned division, with cross-divisional support as needed. Direct and lead staff in ensuring the safety of The Port of Virginia Community and its visitors.
  • Supervise and manage personnel to include analyzing performance and goal achievement through documentation and performance evaluations.
  • Respond to unusual and/or major incidents, including serving as the Incident Commander. Develop and supervise the implementation of tactical plans to safely resolve critical incidents and emergencies; arrange and coordinate mutual aid resources from other law enforcement agencies.
  • Serve as a representative for the department to foster and maintain collaborative relationships with law enforcement agencies, Port of Virginia organizational leadership, and individual citizens. Attend meetings, conduct presentations, and respond to issues with respect to law enforcement/security activities.
  • Plan coordinate, schedule, and manage personnel resources, to include division assignments, training, special events, and contract employees.
  • Ensure compliance and consistency with all federal and state programs, certifications, and regulations.
  • Assist with police recruitment to include ensuring state mandated background investigations are completed in compliance with DCJS mandates.
  • Conduct internal investigations, such as accidents, use of force or misconduct. Review case documentation, interview complainants and witnesses, and prepare findings and recommendations for disposition of cases. Implement decisions as directed.
  • Identify training needs and coordinate or conduct training programs for department personnel.
  • Ensures public records and information are managed, maintained, and disposed in accordance to the Library of Virginia retention and disposition schedules and the Virginia Port Authority records management policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with all security and environmental regulations and policies within work area at all times. This includes properly addressing issues through action or reporting matter and concerns to Manager.
  • Other task and assignments as directed.


Who You Are: Qualifications
  • Associate's degree required.
  • Law Enforcement Certification by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services required.
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License & CPR Certification required.
  • At least three (3) years of experience as a Police Sergeant required.
