JOB TITLE: Chief Academic Officer

FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Exempt (Administrative); salaried employee

WORK DAYS: 246 days (does not include holidays)

STANDARD HOURS PER DAY: 8 hours per day

WORK YEAR: The work year for the Chief Academic Officer begins on the first work day in July, and ends on the last work day in June.

SALARY SCHEDULE & BENEFITS: The Chief Academic Officer is paid on the "Administrator" salary schedule and is eligible for "Administrator" benefits.

REPORTS TO: The Chief Academic Officer reports to the Superintendent.

SUPERVISES: The Director of Professional Learning, K-4 and 5-8 District Literacy and STEM Specialists.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Chief Academic Officer is responsible for the supervision and promotion of a culture of high expectations, student achievement, and accountability by overseeing the development, implementation, and alignment of district-wide curriculum and instructional programming with Indiana Academic Standards. The Chief Academic Officer ensures schools have access to necessary curricular materials, professional development, and digital resources to support effective teaching practices. This role also oversees the selection and adoption of textbooks and formative assessments, organizes and analyzes student assessment data, and serves as the Corporation Testing Coordinator. In collaboration with district leaders, the Chief Academic Officer provides leadership, feedback, and direction to enhance student outcomes and ensure alignment with district priorities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Promotes a culture of high expectations, student achievement, and accountability that facilitates equitable learning opportunities for all students.
  • Responsible for the evaluation, development, and implementation of district-wide curriculum, curriculum resources (i.e., pacing guides), and instructional programming.
  • Ensures district-wide curriculum, curriculum resources, and instructional programming is aligned with the most current version of the Indiana Academic Standards, item specifications, and state-wide assessment blueprints.
  • Guarantees that schools and relevant staff have access to the necessary curricular materials, supplies, and professional development to support effective teaching practices.
  • Provides leadership and oversight of the district-wide curriculum resource / textbook adoption selection process.
  • Procures and provides recommendations for supplemental curriculum resources.
  • Leads the evaluation, development and implementation of district-wide digital curriculum resources.
  • Oversees the evaluation, development, and implementation of formative assessments to support student learning.
  • Organizes and analyzes student assessment data by district, school, and student subgroups to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement, driving instructional decisions and student outcomes.
  • Serves as the Corporation Testing Coordinator (CTC), managing all responsibilities associated with this role.
  • Provides direction, evaluation / feedback, and support to the Director of Professional Learning.
  • Provides direction, evaluation / feedback, and support to the K-4 and 5-8 Literacy and STEM Specialists.
  • Provides direction, leadership and support to the K-4 Literacy Cadre Coaches.
  • Provides direction and leadership to Cabinet, District leaders, building principals, directors, and the teaching and learning team, ensuring responsiveness to state and local assessment data with a focus on improving student achievement.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Professional Learning to design and deliver relevant, impactful professional development opportunities throughout the district.
  • Collaborates with the Superintendent, Cabinet, District, and building leaders to ensure district priorities are aligned and maintain a clear, strategic focus on improving student achievement.
  • Attends Board of Education meetings and provides updates as directed by the Superintendent, ensuring effective communication on key initiatives and student achievement progress.
  • Follows, implements and makes recommendations pertaining to policy and procedures.

  • NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Chairs the Instructional Coherence Team meetings.
  • Collaborates with the Office of Technology to prepare and submit the IDOE's annual report cards for each school.
  • Collaborates annually with Cabinet, District, and building leaders to prepare and update school progress reports.

  • ENTRY-LEVEL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Education/Training: Specialist degree (Ed.S.) required. An earned doctorate from an accredited institution is preferred;
  • Experience: Six years of experience in educational leadership, management, and supervision required. Experience both as a school principal and in the Central Office is preferred;
  • Certification and/or Licenses: Holds or is eligible for certification in educational leadership and/or administration and supervision required;
  • Other: The ability to perform the essential functions and fulfill the physical / sensory / environmental requirements of the job (with or without reasonable accommodations) is required. Success in working with people in establishing goals, setting objectives and developing action plans to produce the expected results is expected.

  • Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (10-20 pounds).
