Job Summary
HGSE is a diverse community of learners, teachers, and employees who are passionate about changing the world through education and striving for maximum impact in the field of education. This is a new, grant-funded position that will be situated within the Democratic Knowledge Project (DKP-Learn), a research lab focused on K-16 civic education, at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. DKP-Learn is led by Professor Danielle Allen. At present, DKP-Learn has three strategic initiatives: civic education in K-12; civic education in higher education; and competency-based assessment K-16, starting with the civics education use case. The new EAD Project Director will oversee the K-12 civic education initiative, currently consisting primarily of a grant-funded EAD-aligned professional development program, with a small amount of time devoted also to a technical assistance program.
The EAD Initiative is currently a collaborative effort involving multiple external partners to advance implementation of the Educating for American Democracy Roadmap, via educator and school leader professional development and technical assistance to school and district implementers. See here to learn more about EAD: https://www.educatingforamericandemocracy.org/ Prof. Allen is a lead author of the Roadmap. The Director of the Educating for American DemocracyK-12 Project will report to the DKP Learn Senior Director of Research, Projects, and Engagement, the staff lead of DKP Learn.
The work of the EAD-Harvard Initiative includes building out a major, online professional development program for K-12 educators, aligned with the EAD Roadmap; providing technical assistance to schools and districts around the country seeking to implement EAD; and contributing to the work of the EAD Consortium. Currently all K-12 programs are in a pilot phase, and so the EAD Director will lead the growth of the work from the pilot phase into a sustainable program. Fundraising is also underway for a project to develop a strategic plan for the use of the EAD Roadmap in the higher education context. The portfolio will evolve as the portfolio of grants shifts.
The Director of the EAD K-12 Project will provide strategic guidance to the DoD PD Project Consultant and Project Manager as well as to the EAD K-5 Pilot Support Director, will work closely with partners at PZ Reach and the ELSCE Design Studio to achieve appropriate resource allocations to complete the grant deliverables; will guide strategic communications, marketing, and external relations for the program; and will represent the body of work at EAD Implementation Consortium meetings. The Director of the EAD K-12 Project will also guide and ensure completion of the strategic planning process for the PD program as well as implementation, managing the project manager who oversees workflow for the team, and creating and managing budgets in collaboration with the Senior Director of Research, Projects, and Engagement. The Director of the EAD K-12 Project will work closely with Prof. Allen, the Senior Director of Research, Projects, and Engagement, and the Project Zero director of Reach, Tina Blythe, on all strategic planning.
