MONELL CHEMICAL SENSES CENTER
The Intellectual Property, Business Development Manager is responsible for managing the organization's technology transfer, intellectual property (IP) portfolio, and business development activities. This role bridges the gap between research and the marketplace, supporting the commercialization of innovative technologies and fostering partnerships that drive business growth. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in intellectual property management, technology licensing, and strategic business development.
The role will include identification, assessment, and protection of intellectual property, including providing strategic advice to senior management and technical staff. This role encompasses business development activities aimed at fostering strategic partnerships, enhancing revenue streams, and expanding Monell's market presence.
The Manager will oversee and encourage technology transfer activities; advise and educate technical staff regarding relevant intellectual property and technology transfer issues; and represent Monell's interests in intellectual property and technology transfer matters with external organizations. Additionally, the Manager serves as the leader of the Patent Committee, working to draft and negotiate licensing, collaboration, material transfer, and confidentiality agreements, and managing the patent process.

Key Responsibilities
Technology Transfer and Commercialization:
- Support the Mission of Monell through the transition of innovative technologies from research and development into the marketplace. This involves establishing and nurturing strategic relationships with industry partners, investors, and other stakeholders to drive the commercialization of new technologies, thereby maximizing their impact and value.
- Evaluate new inventions and research outputs to assess their commercial potential, market viability, and patentability.
- Manage the technology transfer process, including patent filings, licensing agreements, and collaborations with external partners.
- Collaborate with researchers, scientists, and outside patent counsel to protect and commercialize intellectual property.
Licensing and Agreements:
- Negotiate and draft licensing agreements, material transfer agreements, confidentiality agreements, and other contracts related to technology transfer. Manage reporting of federally funded IP.
- Monitor and manage ongoing license agreements to ensure compliance and maximize revenue.
Business Development and Strategic Partnerships:
- Identify business development opportunities that align with the organization's research strengths and technological capabilities.
- Develop and maintain relationships with industry partners, investors, and stakeholders to support technology commercialization.
- Lead market research initiatives to identify trends, competitive landscapes, and potential business opportunities.
- Identify and cultivate corporate partners, sponsors, and investors.
- Expand market presence and revenue streams;
- Provide strategic advice to senior management and technical staff;
- Educate staff on intellectual property and technology transfer issues; participate in development of entrepreneurial training for postdoctoral training program.
- Develop and implement an innovation program coordinated with the corporate partner program, academic partner program, and the development team.
- Ensure effective operations, stay updated on intellectual property law and commercialization trends, and manage the departmental budget.
- Provide guidance and support to researchers and entrepreneurs on the commercialization process, including market validation, IP strategy, and funding opportunities.
- Organize workshops, seminars, and training sessions on topics related to technology transfer, IP management, and business development.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, Business, or a related field; advanced degree (MBA, JD, PhD) preferred.
- Three-Five years of experience in technology transfer, intellectual property management, or business development.
- Strong knowledge of patent law, IP management, and technology licensing.
- Proven track record in negotiating and managing complex agreements, including licenses and collaborations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with researchers, industry partners, and legal professionals.
- Demonstrated ability to identify business opportunities, conduct market analysis, and develop strategic partnerships.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in contract negotiation, project management, and technology assessment tools.
Other Working Conditions
- This position may require occasional travel to meet with external partners, attend conferences, or participate in industry events.
- Ability to work in an office environment with standard working hours, with flexibility for occasional after-hours work as needed.
