Anticipated Director of Special Services
The New Milford school district is seeking a Director of Special Services who is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services for students with special needs, ages 3-21. This position oversees all aspects of special education, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. The Director will work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, child study teams, instructional assistants, and families to provide appropriate educational programming and support services. Additionally, the Director will manage the special services budget, including the IDEA grant and McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act funding, to support students' educational needs. Candidates must hold or be eligible for a New Jersey School Administrator or Principal's Certification.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and monitor special education programs and services for students with disabilities, ages 3-21, ensuring alignment with state and federal guidelines.
  • Oversee the work of child study teams, including school psychologists, social workers, and learning disabilities teacher-consultants, to conduct evaluations, develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and provide appropriate services.
  • Supervise and support special education teachers and instructional assistants, providing professional development and ensuring effective instructional practices.
  • Manage the special services department budget, including the allocation and monitoring of IDEA grant funds, to ensure resources are used effectively and efficiently.
  • Administer McKinney-Vento services to support the educational stability and success of students experiencing homelessness.
  • Collaborate with general education staff and administrators to create inclusive environments and practices that support students with special needs.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal and state laws, regulations, and policies related to special education, including IDEA, Section 504, and ADA.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and practices to ensure the effective delivery of special education services.
  • Lead and coordinate professional development for staff on special education regulations, instructional strategies, and inclusive practices.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school district and parents, community agencies, and organizations to support students with disabilities.
  • Conduct program evaluations and data analysis to assess the effectiveness of special education programs and make data-driven decisions for continuous improvement.
  • Prepare reports and present findings to the Board of Education, district administrators, and other stakeholders as needed.
