Summary of Position: Cytotechnologists are specially trained to examine tissue and cellular samples under a microscope, evaluating the slides for specific abnormalities in the cell's shape, color or size which could signal a cancerous process or other disease. When abnormal cells are detected, the cytotechnologist works closely with the Pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Technical: Performs microscopic evaluation of gynecological and non-gynecological specimens following Bethesda guidelines. Demonstrates technical expertise and competence for all assigned tasks. Performs testing according to SOP. Determines acceptability of specimens, maintains positive identification, and resolves and documents any discrepancies. Performs cytopreparation of gyn and non-gyn specimens following SOP.
Equipment: Maintains extensive knowledge of instrument and equipment, including routine operation, proper working order, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting.
Quality: Performs, evaluates and documents required quality control procedures; documents remedial action. Performs quality assurance activities as directed by Supervisor and/or Pathologist. Works with Supervisor to maintain correct documentation, writing new procedures, writing revisions,
Evaluation: Uses good analytical judgment and problem solving skills to evaluate test results. Accurately reports test results. Notifies Supervisor and/or Pathologist of problems and follows up as directed.
Information System: Demonstrates a working knowledge of laboratory information system, including basic routines and other menus.
Reporting: Generates, reviews and acts on reports as required by laboratory protocol.
Training: Participates in training and orientation of staff.
Minimum Qualifications: BS Degree in related science field. Previous experience preferred. ASCP Certification in Cytotechnology (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) required. NYS Cytotechnologist license required.
Salary Range: $31.00 - $47.90
Pay Grade: CL1
