JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION

JOB PURPOSE: Prevent and treat educational and behavioral problems by identifying children between the ages of 3 and 21 with special needs. Consult with teachers and staff members in developing, implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of specific behavior or educational interventions and school programs.

Requirements:
1. Minimum of a Master's Degree. Doctoral or Ed Specialist preferred.
2. Must obtain a current State of Alaska certificate, issued by the Department of Education or State of Alaska Teaching certification.

Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
1. Must consult with teachers and staff members in developing, implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of specific behavioral or educational interventions and school programs.
2. Collaborate as a member of school-based teams that may include: intervention, evaluation, IEP, Section 504 accommodation plans, and critical incident plans.
3. Assist school in times of crisis as a member of school-based critical incident response team.
4. Conduct applied educational research.
5. Provides in-service training for parents, teachers, and administrators.
6. Administers and interprets various standardized psycho-educational instruments.
7. Demonstrates expertise in the use of standardized and alternative assessment techniques that may include curriculum-based assessment measures; informal reading, writing, and mathematics methods; observation techniques; behavior rating scales; and projective testing techniques.
8. Analyze, integrate, and report psychological and education information about child behavior and assist in the development of goals and objectives for IEPs.
9. Must be knowledgeable of Federal, State, and District regulation and policies including IDEA, Section 504 and pupil intervention systems.
10. Deliver a program of individual and group counseling including social skills training and parent training for students deemed in need of such services.
11. Provide leadership in the continual development of the school district's special education program.
12. Follow recognized standards of professional practice and state and local codes of ethics for school psychologists.
13. Must participate in the implementation of RTI and PBA.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Language Skills : Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general educational periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, State and Federal Grants, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, and parents.

Mathematical Skill : Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability : Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Problem Solving: Can identify and resolves problems in a timely manner. Gathers and analyzes information skillfully. Develops alternative solutions. Works well in group problem solving situations. Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.

Project Management: Develops and coordinates projects. Clearly communicates project plans, progress, and changes. Completes projects on time. Manages project activities and teams.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk or hear. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands and interact with the public and other staff.
