Summary
The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking a Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner who will provide care to Hepatopancreatobiliary surgical oncology patients under the direction of a physician. This position will assist the supervising physician with evaluating and assessing patients to determine treatment plans. They will see post-operative patients.
Job Duties
- Obtains detailed history and performs physical examinations for peri-operative care of surgical oncology patients.
- Performs or orders x-rays, electrocardiograms, laboratory tests, and other diagnostic procedures, and interprets results.
- Formulates an assessment and plan; orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic tests in coordinator with faculty supervising physician.
- Round on inpatients nearing discharge, develop care plans, and provide detailed counseling on home care and clinic follow-up.
- Perform patient discharges and attend multi-disciplinary rounds to inform all teams of patient plans.
- Evaluate and treat postoperative and/or established patients independently as delegated in the clinic.
- Instructs patients on prescribed therapeutic regimens, home care and health maintenance.
- Administers such therapeutic procedures as injections, immunizations, suturing, and wound care.
- Performs bedside wound care procedures such as suture removal, staple removal, drain removal, and dressing changes.
- Perform pre-operative tasks such as reviewing pending labs and imaging results, and screening upcoming clinics, as well as post-operative phone calls.
Minimum Qualifications
Required qualifications for physician assistant:
- Education Required: master's degree in physician assistant studies.
- Experience Required: None required.
- Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board. The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) board certification. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
Required qualifications for nurse practitioner:
- Education Required: master's degree in in Nursing.
- Experience Required: None required.
- Certification/Licenses/Registration: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP). Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
