POSITION SUMMARY:

The TOSA Secondary Literacy Coach position will facilitate district and site student achievement efforts related to literacy. This position supports embedding literacy strategies in all content areas.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Facilitate the growth and development of district reading teachers.
  • Model instructional practices and coach teachers to support and strengthen their use of literacy practices in a non-evaluative form.
  • Work closely with the district Teaching and Learning Department, building principals, and instructional coaches to identify and support building wide literacy needs across content areas.
  • Promote strategies that reduce or eliminate racial disparities in student outcomes.
  • Serve on the district curriculum review team(s) in the unpacking of standards and selection of quality instructional materials that will promote disciplinary literacy.
  • Assist with student assessments to identify those eligible for intervention services, to plan instruction, and/or to assist staff members in learning various assessment techniques.
  • Use data to drive literacy intervention PLC and school improvement discussions at all 6-12 schools.
  • Assist sites, departments, grade levels and departments with discussions focused on student growth.
  • Model intervention practices and coach teachers to support and strengthen their use of interventions in a non-evaluative form.
  • Meet with other professionals to discuss individual students' needs and progress.
  • Collect and share data to support literacy initiatives at the school and district levels.
  • Support MTSS framework at all 6-12 sites.
  • Provide professional development for 6-12 teachers related to reading and writing interventions.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, administrative guidelines, and specific program requirements.
  • Provide staff development related to literacy, including infusing literacy into the core areas of academic curriculum and instructional coaching through a literacy lens.

  • JOB SPECIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, LICENSE, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES):

    Required:
  • Current Minnesota teacher licensure
  • 5+ years of experience as a classroom teacher
  • Extensive knowledge of evidence-based K-12 literacy practices, issues, opportunities, and current research
  • Experience working with adults in an educational setting
  • Deep belief in equitable practices leading to the elimination of predictable achievement disparities
  • Experience facilitating effective PLC (professional learning community) conversations based on data
  • Experience providing quality professional development for K-12 teachers
  • Strong technical and organizational skills
  • Communicates with students, families, co-workers, supervisors, and the community in a positive, professional, and responsive manner that is consistently welcoming, enhances effective work relationships, and positively promotes South Washington County Schools
  • Demonstrated initiative in starting and leading projects, and finding solutions
  • Completion of one of the MDE required literacy trainings - CAREIALL. LETRS, or CORE.

  • Desired:
  • Current K-12 Reading License, or graduate degree in reading or literacy-related focus
  • Experience as an instructional coach
  • Administrative Licensure or working toward an administrative degree
