Job Summary

Gettysburg College announces the search for the Robert C. Fluhrer Professor of Civil War Studies and the Director of its Civil War Institute [CWI]. No American college is better or more suited to offer exemplary programs focused on the American Civil War than Gettysburg College. As Fluhrer Professor of Civil War Studies, the successful candidate will be a recognized scholar in Civil War era studies and a dedicated teacher and will lead Gettysburg College's prestigious Civil War Institute. The Fluhrer Professorship is based on the teacher-scholar model, and the next Fluhrer Professor will be an active member of the College's Department of History, making contributions in scholarship, teaching, advising, mentoring, and service to the department and College. The Fluhrer Professor also serves as the Director of the CWI and is responsible for leading the Institute and growing its connections within the College and with outside organizations and constituencies. Specific responsibilities of the Director include overseeing a staff of three who assist in organizing and running the CWI Summer Institute, the Civil War Era Studies minor, the Public History minor, and the extensive internship program at public history sites. In recognition of the duties associated with Directorship of the CWI, the Fluhrer Professor will have a reduced teaching load of the equivalent of three courses each year.

Qualifications

We seek qualified candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. degree in history, demonstrate a record of distinguished scholarship in the history of the Civil War era, and have the ability to administer and develop the Civil War Institute. The successful candidate will assume the position in summer 2025.
