Offshore Wind Engineering Manager

The Opportunity:

The utility scale Offshore Wind market in the US is expanding rapidly, to meet commitments from the States for renewable energy generation and carbon free energy solutions for the next decade and beyond. The Offshore Wind Engineering Manager is responsible for all hardware/equipment engineering, software/automation development, and operations engineering related to GLDD's offshore wind installation activities including scour protection installation. This is a key position to support GLDD's strategic entry into the burgeoning US offshore wind market and capture a tremendous growth opportunity as the world transitions to cleaner, carbon free sources of energy. The position reports directly to the SVP, Offshore Wind, and it is based at GLDD Headquarters, in Houston

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all engineering activities related to the first state-of-the-art Subsea Rock Installation vessel built in the US. The vessel will be a highly automated, technologically advanced vessel for accurate placement of scour protection in offshore wind farms, for stabilizing foundations, protecting cables etc.
  • Oversee the development of mission critical hardware/equipment for the Subsea Rock Installation Vessel, such as fallpipe equipment, conveyor belt systems, excavators, survey equipment, sensors etc. Work with suppliers to develop the hardware requirements for rock installation equipment in order to optimize the performance and production rate of the rock installation vessel.
  • Oversee the development of the software interface systems between the vessel's fallpipe system, the survey equipment, and the Dynamic Positioning system for optimal rock placement accuracy in all sea states.
  • Develop the automation and control systems for the rock installation equipment, working with the major suppliers of the mission critical equipment.
  • Develop the expertise in offshore wind survey systems (multi-beam, sonar, etc) required for offshore wind installation and specifically for scour protection installation.
  • Develop the expertise in scour protection design and engineering to allow design of scour protection systems for wind farm installations.
  • Optimize production rates and workability windows for the rock installation vessel through motion analysis, systems engineering, automated controls, and robust software/hardware integration systems.
  • Manage/train the engineering team to develop the above systems and transition into operations when the vessel starts offshore wind farm installations in the East Coast.

Qualifications:

Professional qualifications for this important position include:
  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering or Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering;
  • 10+ years of experience in Systems Engineering;
  • Experience in design/analysis and engineering of complex marine or mechanical systems;
  • Experience in distributed automation and process control systems;
  • Experience in SW development in modern process control systems, expert systems or process control logic with use of ML and AI capabilities for automation is a plus;
  • Experience in European Offshore Wind Engineering is a definite plus;
  • Experience in Rock Installation engineering is a plus;
  • Excellent communications skills for interfacing and developing requirements with suppliers of hardware/software
  • Leadership skills, motivated, self-starter, results oriented
  • Project Management experience, 5+ years
