Title: Actuarial Manager

Location: Hybrid (3 days a week onsite) in Goochland, VA

Overview:

The Actuary Manager leads the actuarial team in developing pricing strategies, conducting profitability analysis, and implementing advanced actuarial methods for various lines of business. This role ensures that rates are competitive, financially sound, and aligned with the company's strategic objectives. The Actuary Manager is a key collaborator with other departments to inform risk management, support business growth, and drive data-driven decision-making.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Actuarial Analysis & Rate Setting:
    • Develop, evaluate, and oversee actuarial rate structures to ensure profitability and competitiveness across all product lines.
  • Profitability Assessment:
    • Analyze historical data and trends, perform loss ratio analysis, and apply predictive modeling to assess and forecast profitability.
  • Strategic Leadership:
    • Lead the actuarial team in aligning pricing strategies with business goals and strategic planning. Support initiatives that inform financial forecasts, business plans, and risk management strategies.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration:
    • Partner with Underwriting, Product Management, and Finance teams to drive strategic decisions and implement changes that support overall business objectives.
  • Team Development & Management:
    • Manage and mentor actuarial staff, providing guidance, training, and support for professional development. Oversee team resources and project allocations to meet department objectives.
  • Compliance & Reporting:
    • Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and industry standards. Prepare and present actuarial reports to senior leadership, providing insights on risk, pricing strategies, and business performance.
  • Process Improvement:
    • Lead initiatives to improve actuarial methodologies, data quality, and operational efficiency. Drive process automation and the adoption of advanced analytics to enhance the team's capabilities.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.
  • Professional designation such as FCAS, ACAS, or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of experience in property and casualty insurance, with at least 5 years in a management or leadership role.

Skills & Competencies:
  • Strong technical skills in actuarial analysis and predictive modeling.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Proficiency in data management and statistical software.
  • Effective communication skills to present complex actuarial concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and manage a team to achieve high performance.

Preferred Experience:
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance, industry trends, and emerging risks.
  • Experience in developing actuarial tools and implementing process automation.
  • Knowledge of one or more programming languages (e.g., R, Python) is a plus.
